Africa is home to some of the most Instagrammable places in the world

1. Cape Town, South Africa

Not just one of the most Instagrammable places in Africa, Cape Town is probably one of the most Instagrammable spots in the world. Home to Table Mountain, rolling Winelands and sandy beaches, I’m sure it comes as no surprise that South Africa’s Mother City is number one! With captivating natural scenery and bustling aesthetic hotspots, your followers are in for a treat.

Swim at Boulders Beach, where adorable penguins waddle along the sand and paddle through the waves. Or hike to the top of Lion’s Head for a panoramic timelapse of the most stunning sunsets. Adventurers can also paraglide off Signal Hill with your GoPro for impressive action shots of the city, beaches and the iconic Table Mountain! Therefore, Cape Town is a must for anyone seeking a leisure-filled Instagrammable holiday destination.

2. Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe/Zambia

No list of the most Instagrammable places in Africa would be complete without including one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls. This largest sheet of falling water forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and offers plenty of fantastic opportunities to see, hear and capture this extraordinary spectacle.

Cruise along the Zambezi River, drink in hand on a sunset boat trip. Or the brave can take a dip in Devil’s Pool for an up-close view of the sheer drop over the side of the Falls. Adrenaline seekers will also enjoy zip-lining across the gorge, suspended above the breathtakingly beautiful Zambezi River, which is perfect for capturing unique Reels content! Therefore, the photo ops here are endless, with a plethora of activities for both adventure seekers and laidback guests.

3. Amboseli National Park, Kenya

The Amboseli National Park boasts the magnificent backdrop of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. The park has a variety of wildlife, but its most celebrated resident is the African elephant. Despite being in Kenya, Amboseli offers some of the most exquisite views of Africa’s tallest mountain, providing iconic scenery for your photos and videos.

Elephants are in abundance in Amboseli, frolicking in the marshes, strolling through the dusty plains, and posing for awe-struck, camera-wielding tourists, with Mount Kilimanjaro to set the scene. The photo opportunities are best first thing in the morning, so don’t skip your morning game drives!

4. Sossusvlei, Namibia

The Namib Desert is a true canvas of beauty that allows you to reconnect with yourself and nature. Sossusvlei is one of Namibia’s most well-known and photographed locations. With vast expanses of rust-red dunes, bleached-white pans and endless deep blue skies, could it get any better than this?

The sand in the Sossusvlei region is estimated to be around 5 million years old. And with its pronounced dune shadows, distinctive red-coloured sand and the exceptional clarity of light, this is an exceptionally photogenic location. Sossusvlei also has some of the darkest night skies on earth, making it the ultimate spot for stargazing and taking incredible photos of the star-studded sky.

5. Okavango Delta, Botswana

Known as “the river that never finds the sea”, Botswana’s Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world. This expansive, largely undisturbed wetland of twisting oxbow streams is home to a diverse variety of wildlife, extensive floodplains and riverine woodland. And here, you’ll find opportune moments to capture the best content around every corner of the Delta’s islands and canals.

Grab your GoPro and take a ride in a traditional mokoro (dug-out canoe) down the Okavango Delta’s waterways. Or embark on a scenic helicopter flight for the opportunity to take unique birds-eye-view photos. If you’re a keen photographer, a helicopter with no doors will allow for unrestricted panoramic views.

6. Kruger National Park, South Africa

The Kruger National Park needs no upselling, as it’s always dressed to impress. Rated consistently as one of Africa’s most exceptional safari experiences, Kruger is home to South Africa’s leading private luxury lodges. If you ever wanted the chance to capture picture-perfect photos of the Big 5 in their natural environment, the national park is the destination for you. But safari excursions don’t have to mean roughing it, as silver-plated service and swimming pools are on the menu making for magnificent safari Reels!

7. Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Is your Instagram feed lacking some greenery? Volcanoes National Park protects the thickly forested slopes of the spectacular Virunga Mountain Range in Rwanda’s far northwestern region. Not only is it breathtaking, but the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range are home to roughly half of the world’s wild population of endangered mountain gorillas.

Make sure you’ve packed your tripod, extra memory cards and power banks because there’s something for everyone to enjoy here. From hiking to mountain biking, canoeing to village visits – your photo library will be overflowing! Furthermore, the volcanoes provide the most luscious jungle scenery for gorilla trekking. And these intimate, up-close interactions will make for the most memorable photos.

8. Mahé, Seychelles

Don’t forget to add Seychelles to your bucket list of Instagrammable places in Africa, as this beautiful continent has so much more to offer than safaris. The Indian Ocean archipelago of Seychelles has picturesque white, sandy beaches and azure waters, all teeming with extraordinary bird, plant and marine life, making for the most striking underwater photos.

Home to dozens of pristine beaches, this is a fantastic location for beautiful beach photoshoots, sipping cocktails out of coconuts and exploring untouched stretches of soft white sand. In other words, it’s perfect for all kinds of selfies! Mahé is a destination for thrill-seekers, explorers, and adventurers, so make sure you have a few extra memory cards on hand!

9. Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is located in the middle of dry northeastern Botswana. All of our most Instagrammable places in Africa have something special about them, and the Makgadikgadi Pans is no exception. This collection of salt flats is one of the biggest in the world, and used to be a huge lake that has since evaporated.

The Makgadikgadi Pans provide one-of-a-kind safari experiences, including walking and driving safaris, birdwatching, quad biking and meerkat encounters. One can also participate in excursions to historical sights to learn about the connection between the natural environment and the ancient culture that once existed there. As the CEO and Founder of Rhino Africa, my life’s work has been dedicated to creating life-changing journeys to Africa, for Rhino Africa’s guests from around the world. Firm in my belief that travel has the ability to change the world; the game-changing force that uplifts communities and protects our endangered wildlife. Tourism enriches all our lives, and promises the best opportunity for community upliftment, through the creation of stable and sustainable employment opportunities in rural African areas.

Every day I am reminded what a privilege it is to be African. As I bring my young family up here, I am constantly in awe of how blessed we are to have Africa’s people, wildlife, and landscapes as our everyday mentor, inspiration, and guide. There is simply no end to the kindness, beauty, and talent found on this continent, and it is this passion that lights our fire and drives our vision of creating a lasting impact on this continent we all call home.

David’s perfect Travel Itinerary

Guests often ask me, “given a choice – do you prefer bush or beach?” As someone that always prefers to dine from the buffet of life, my usual retort is, “Why choose one when you can have the best of both?!”.

The truth is I really couldn’t choose! Africa’s wildlife and landscapes are as equally alluring as the azure blue water of the Indian Ocean Islands. Choosing the ultimate “bush and beach” combination on the other hand is easy; Botswana’s Okavango Delta and one of the Seychelles’ many private islands.

David Ryan recommends a visit to the Seychelles
Seychelles: Combine the Okavango Delta with this island paradise

A combination originally designed as the ultimate Royal Honeymoon; I think William and Kate make for a fair testimonial! The low volume, high value tourism proposition of Botswana and the Seychelles now make it the perfect “social distancing” holiday, quite ironic really!

What makes the Okavango special?

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland Delta in the world. It’s made up of an intricate network of channels & lagoons, and with over 150,000 islands it is one of Africa’s vast unspoiled and pristine wilderness areas teeming with wildlife. It is simply breathtaking and should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Special moment: The seasonal floods return to the Okavango Delta

There is no shortage of comfort and style in the many Camps and Lodges dotted around this 15,000 square kilometer wilderness, but it is the experience that will leave you truly changed. Reminisce fireside about your day’s game viewing by mokoro (dugout canoe), boat or land rover. Wake to the loud grumbling of an elephant’s tummy and lie silent and still in your luxury tent while it grazes only a stone’s throw away. Experience sunsets unlike any other, as the sun dips on another day that will undoubtedly leave you forever changed.

Experience the wild heart of Africa in the Okavango Delta

There are so many reasons to visit the Okavango Delta, but here a few of mine:

  • Enjoy a mokoro safari – a traditional dugout canoe
  • Sip the Delta waters – the largest water filter in the world!
  • Pit your skills, wit and rod against a Delta tiger fish
  • Listen to an elephant feeding next to your tent
  • Watch out for a pels fishing owl – at the top of every birders list!
  • Get face to face with Jabu the Elephant at Stanley’s Camp
  • Go on an evening safari to photograph crocodiles, aardvark and pangolin if you are really lucky
  • 550 species of birds in the Delta
  • The Okavango Delta is the wildlife capital of Africa

The Seychelles – exclusive Island Royalty

Situated in the western waters of the Indian Ocean, off the east coast of Africa, the Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands scattered across the deep blue sea. The islands are home to white sand beaches and tropical forest while the iridescent waters are filled with pristine coral reefs, tropical fish and an array of marine life. Tell me your bags are not already packed.

Towering palms frame rustic retreats which open up onto this unspoiled getaway – it not only feels like paradise – it really is! If discovering untouched beaches, exploring private coves for snorkelling and swimming, going scuba diving among a kaleidoscope of coral reefs and tropical fish, taking a stroll through traditional markets, or hop aboard a sailing boat is your idea of the perfect holiday, then the Seychelles is the perfect destination for you. Here you don’t just choose a hotel, you choose an island!

One of David Ryan's favourite African Safari Experience: Seychelles
Who wouldn’t love to relax on this beach?

Again there are so many reasons to visit the Seychelles, but here a few of mine:

  • Silky sand and crystal clear waters
  • Palm-fringed beaches and colourful coral reefs
  • Sumptuous seafood and cocktails
  • 115 breathtaking islands
  • Dive amongst colourful tropical fish and corals
  • Perfect all-year round with 365 days of sunshine!

I like to think of life as an “AND” not and “OR” and if you are going to combine two of Africa’s bucket list destinations, Botswana and Seychelles are the ultimate combination!

Mesmerizing Seychelles Wildlife

The idyllic enchantment of the Seychelles has long been an attraction for newlyweds and couples looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Touch down on Mahé, the main island which serves as a base for all your romantic adventures across the turquoise waters and pearly sands. Here you’ll encounter a myriad of Seychelles wildlife, some of which are extremely rare and endemic to this group of islands.

Reptiles

Take a trip with your partner to Cousin Island to see the hawksbill turtles laying their eggs (one of the only spectacular scenes like this that is visible during the day). Of course, you cannot leave the islands without seeing the Aldabra giant tortoise which is found on other Indian Ocean Islands but is originally a part of Seychelles wildlife. Head to La Digue to combine this sighting with some of the world’s best beaches!

Birds

Seychelles Wildlife

Seychelles wildlife is filled with an assortment of the largest seabird colonies consisting of species such as frigatebirds and other colourful and exotic tropical varieties like the red fody above. Since this cluster of islands was uninhabited by humans for so long, these ecosystems have had the opportunity to flourish through the millennia, hosting rare creatures found nowhere else. You’ll be intrigued by the rarest of all, the Seychelles paradise flycatcher which is also critically endangered.

Fish & Crustaceans

Venture out to Silhouette Island where there is a constellation of soft and hard corals that provide resources to over 1000 species of fish. While lying out on the beach, enjoying a romantic post-snorkelling picnic, keep an eye out for another peculiar creature – the coconut crab. This colourful crustacean can grow up to one meter in length but is skittish around humans, so don’t fret if a giant crab doesn’t sound as charming to you.

Mammals

Seychelles Wildlife

The largest mammals on the Seychelles islands are interestingly all marine life! A very rare sighting is the dugong, which is endemic to these waters. Take a ride on a traditional dhow or sail across the Indian Ocean waves on a sunset cruise, spotting orca, humpback whales, Bryde’s whale and a wealth of dolphin species. These striking marine animals like to break through to the surface and can also be seen on a scuba-diving expedition with your loved one.

Flora

Be captivated by the endangered coco de mer plantations on Praslin island’s Vallée de Mai; the only place in the world where this species grows. Another impressive but critically endangered tree to marvel at is the jellyfish tree which is so named because the fruit on the tree resembles a type of jellyfish!

Enchanting Island Activities

While each place offers its own selection of activities, you’re sure to find some from of these four everywhere you go. We recommend organising these activities ahead of time through us or your hotel/resort because everything is rosier when you can sit back and just enjoy the whirlwind romance of the Seychelles.

La Digue

Known for having the second-best beach in the World, La Digue is where couples can go to soak up the sun. The best way to see the different islands is from the sky. There are fewer things more romantic than holding your loved one’s hand while flying over tropical waters and lush green forests. The Seychelles is ideal for this because of its clear waters that allow you to witness all the dhows gliding over the ocean as well as any marine life making its way to the surface.

Praslin

The Valleé de Mai is a mystical forest that is made up of the endangered Coco de Mer palm. Cousin Island

The only place where you will find hawksbill turtles nesting during the day is on Cousin Island between October and January. These little hatchlings make their way to the sea eight weeks later, so it’s a difficult choice between you and your partner to decide which sight is more splendid. Other creatures include the green turtle and the freshwater terrapin, elusive creatures that have called the Seychelles home for millennia.

6 Reasons You Should Visit Seychelles

Experiences,Indian Ocean Islands,Travel Tips
0 comments

Find yourself on a pure white sandy beach, surrounded by crystal waters with all the warmth of the Indian Ocean. This old historical island was at one time populated by members of the French East India Company who went on to define the local language. Later, it became a British colony with vast coconut farms and the creole-speaking slave descendants made up the majority of the population. Seychelles achieved its independence in 1976 and is now home to a fusion of cultures as well as grand beach resorts. Read on below for just six (of many) reasons why you should visit Seychelles.

1. Snorkelling

Head to Coco Island where you can swim with turtles. Tread carefully, as the turtles are not the only vulnerable species in the waters. Dive down to view the plethora of coral reefs that make Seychelles so special and spy over 1,000 fish species, some of which are found nowhere else in the world.

2. Hiking

Hike to the highest point on the main island of Seychelles, Mahe. The view from the top is breathtaking as all the neighbouring islands are visible. An easier trek is the Vallee de Mai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, abundant with natural life and home to a nature reserve that invites you to make the most of your trip to Seychelles.

3. Island Hopping

Charter a boat and engage in some luxury island hopping. The locals know how to navigate the tricky inner and outer island reefs while you sip on some champagne and enjoy the radiant tropical views. Hop off the boat and absorb the local French colonial architecture or stop at a little eatery.

  • Praslin Island has a casino, art gallery and museum. It is also one of only two islands where Coco de Mer grows
  • Aride Island hosts a bird nature reserve where several endangered species have been willed from the edge of extinction
  • Cerf Island is a delightful picnic spot due to its quiet beaches and peaceful walks

4. Local Cuisine

When you visit Seychelles it is vital to try the local cuisine. Relish freshly grilled fish, octopus curry and a dessert of ladob, which is a sweet treat of either potato or banana cooked in coconut milk and spices. Seychelles also hosts several food festivals and Mahe island throws an annual carnival where you are invited to sample the best flavours.

5. Private Beaches

A striking experience endemic to the area is Anse a La Mouche where the organisms in the water glow after dark. A special chemical causes the effect of bio-luminescence, making for an intriguing midnight swim. Another option is Bombe Bay that you can only access on foot or by bicycle, meaning that it’s generally not too crowded.

6. Rare Wildlife

Seychelles is a hub of biodiversity with around 115 islands of all sizes scattered across the ocean. These islands remained largely uninhabited until the 1600s, which provided ample time for life to flourish. Explore the many reserves and learn more about their conservation efforts with animals like the magpie robin and the hawksbill sea turtle. Seychelles also has the highest concentration of Aldabra tortoises in the world!

Cape Town,Kenya,Top Lists

The sun is warm on your face. As you stand up, a slight breeze moves the air around you. The baked white sand heats the bottom of your feet as they carry you towards the ocean. Water laps softly over your toes, and, as you wade deeper, the transparent sea surrounds you in its cool but refreshing embrace. You stroll back to your deck chair, book, and G&T… the stresses of life having long since exited your mind.

Although, Africa is renowned for its safari holidays, the continent and its surrounds hold some of the world’s most exquisite beaches. Here are some of our favourites. Warning: get ready to experience extreme levels of wanderlust.

1. Tsarabanjina beach:

This tiny idyllic island is located off the coast of Madagascar, near Nosy Be. Home to dreamy turquoise waters and powdery sand, the remote beach is also devoid of crowds as the island is only accessible via boat. This is perfect for an intimate beach getaway.

2. Watamu beach:

In Kenya’s Watamu National Marine Park you’ll come across this quiet sandy paradise. A renowned snorkeling destination, this beach hides beauty beneath its ocean surface as well. In ideal weather conditions, try your hand at kite surfing.

3. Anse Source d’Argent:

Surrounded by towering smooth boulders and cascading jungle, Anse Source d’Argent is one of the most photographed beaches in Seychelles. Finished by soft snow-coloured sand and dreamy cerulean ocean, this beach is nothing short of spectacular. Feel free to swim or enjoy the sun with picnic baskets at hand.

4. Nungwi beach:

Home to a plethora of travel-brochure beaches, most of Zanzibar’s coastlines will leave you starry-eyed and drooling, including the picture-perfect Nungwi beach. With unimaginably turquoise water and practically untouched sand, it’s perfection personified.

5. Camps Bay beach:

With prime views of the Twelve Aspostles Mountain Range, combined with sky blue water and powdery white sand, Camps Bay is certainly one of the Mother City’s most renowned beaches. Although the water is a little chilly, this is the place to be on a hot day — the views will never disappoint. Across the road, several excellent restaurants and ice cream shops serve up treats to match the view.

6. Anse Georgette:

One of the less frequented beaches of Praslin, Anse Georgette is no less beautiful. Often less crowded than other beaches and with unbelievably clear water, this beach is pure paradise for water babies in Seychelles. Be sure to pack picnic to complete the day of relaxation.

Where To Stay On Your Holiday

Resort Hotels versus Boutique Hotels. Both are luxurious and a far cry from Fawlty Towers, but why choose to stay at one over the other?

In this article we highlight the pros and cons of each to help you choose the right type of property for your holiday. In a nutshell, while the standard of service should be top notch in both, resorts are all encompassing, providing guests with restaurants, bars, sports, entertainment and shopping in a microcosm. In contrast, boutique hotels are smaller, offering fewer facilities but a warmer, more intimate experience integrated with the destination.

Traveller Match: All work and no play? Had enough of car hooters, board meetings and dirty diapers? Sometimes an all-in-one stop is just what’s needed. Catch a few rays by the pool, allow yourself to be pampered to within an inch of your life and take a well-deserved break from reality. Resorts are ideal for: families, honeymooners, golfers, sun worshippers, VIPs, businesspeople, and yuppies on the edge.

PROS

  • You never have to leave – everything is onsite – Eat, sleep, shop and play, even work and exercise. Under one roof.
  • Stress- and fuss-free – Resorts are ideal if you want to get away from it all, forget the daily grind and enjoy being pampered. Simply arrive and leave everything in the staff’s capable hands while you enjoy everything on offer.
  • Activities – Resorts tend to have luxury spas  and gyms, so you can keep fit and beautiful while on holiday, as well as swimming pools and other activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving, golfing, casinos and safaris, to name but a few (depending on the destination).

Watch our video of Cape Towns’ One& Only for a closer look at resort hotels:

  • Dining and entertainment – Resorts often provide entertainment for guests, from karaoke evenings to Mauritian Sega dances. They also have restaurants and bars for you to wine and dine to your stomach’s content.
  • Childcare facilities – Many resorts offer services and activities tailored to kids of all ages, such as playrooms with TVs, DVDs, Playstations, computers, toys, jungle gyms, etc. This way you can be sure your young ones will be entertained and you, as the parents, have more personal time to relax, knowing your children are occupied and safe.

Resort Style Hotels – CONS

  • Resorts aren’t for everyone. They’re generally more expensive and food and drink are sold at resort prices. It’s easy and convenient to order food and drink, so just watch that tab!
  • Since guests don’t really need to ever leave the resort, they get a rather sheltered experience of the destination they’re visiting.

Smaller Boutique Hotels

Traveller Match: Real travellers. Modern-day explorers who want to experience a destination in comfort and style without feeling like they’re on a Gap year. Boutique Hotels are ideal for: independent travellers, honeymooners, the young and hip, businesspeople and romantic getaways.

PROS

  • Generally more affordable
  • Privacy – Boutique Hotels are a smaller, more intimate option. There are fewer people, giving you a more exclusive feel.
  • Personal touch – The service is more personalised and personable, especially at owner-run establishments.
  • Character – They have a warmer, more “home away from home” atmosphere and a distinctive style.
  • Great base to explore the area from – Boutique Hotels are generally well integrated into cities and the surrounds in great locations from which to meet locals and really get under the skin of your destination.

Watch our video of MannaBay for a look at boutique hotels:

Smaller Boutique Hotels – CONS

    • You don’t have the luxury of having all the services and facilities that you might need in one place. Many have gyms, spas and restaurants on site, but most do not, encouraging you to branch out and explore your new surroundings – the knowledgeable staff, however, are most times happy to help organise tours for you.

Look at all the pretty pictures! Sometimes writing about a destination just won’t do it justice. Sure if you’re a master of the pen and your descriptions rival those of the Bard himself, that’s perfect. Unfortunately our esteemed writer and resident master of the written word, Tamlin is currently out of the office. This leaves the task to me and I’m still struggling too, to, two learn the difference, if you get my drift. So instead I’ve put together a visual feast showcasing the Indian Ocean Islands. The Indian Ocean is the third largest body of water in the world and nestled in its warm waters are some of Rhino Africa’s most romantic destinations.

Overachieving Africa

You’d be forgiven for thinking that this morning’s mob of groggy, puffy eyed Capetonians were the product of a citywide spike in libido, but I assure you that our sleepless night was due to the 18°C night-time low (cue a collective gasp from the Northern Hemisphere). With the 2010/2011 summer touted by many to be a record breaker, I thought I’d continue the general overachiever theme and highlight some curious top ten record holders from across the continent. In no particular order:

1. For the hotheaded, a trip to Oldoinyo Lengai Volcano in northern Tanzania will reveal the world’s coldest erupting lava. The natrocarbonatite lava bubbles from the deepest earth at a nippy 500-600°C (a good 1000 degrees below the norm).

2. To escape the crowds, plan a visit to the country with the smallest population of any African state. With a population of some 84,000 the entire nation of the Seychelles could fit into Wembley Stadium with a seat or 6,000 to spare.

3. For those who enjoy a good paddle and a seaward challenge, follow in the footsteps of an intrepid South African who covered a distance of 6,152 km on a surf-ski between Hout Bay, South Africa, and Lamu, Kenya. With a strategic, luxury night or two on either end of the journey, I’m sure the 5 months at sea will fly by.

4. If you prefer to remain dry but still enjoy the thrill of surfing. The monstrous dunes outside Swakopmund, Namibia, have played host to the fastest recorded sand skiing run, clocking in at 92.12km/h.

5. While you have the momentum, try and match the fastest ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro, credited to a Frenchman who ran the 34 Km up to the summit in 5 hours and 26 minutes.

6. From the roof of Africa and her highest point, to well, the basement. The Maldives have the lowest general elevation of any African state at just 1.5 metres above sea level. If you fancy a hike, their highest peak is also the lowest highest point on the planet- a towering 2.3 metres above sea level.

7. For those who have a taste for all things sparkly, on a trip to Madagascar you will find yourself at the site where the world’s largest emerald in a matrix was discovered. Weighing in at 536 kg I think customs will be more than a little suspicious at the hefty hand luggage you are hauling around departures.

8. If you’re feeling a little homesick due to the lack of historic buildings, get your dose of yesteryear in Stone Town, Zanzibar, which is the world’s oldest, functioning Swahili village dating back to the early 1800’s. And you thought history was invented in Europe.

9. After your blast from the past, a leap over the Bloukrans River Bridge tethered to a bungee cord will leave you with only 18 more jumps to go to beat the record breaking 19 bungee jumps in one hour.

10. If, perhaps, Africa has grown on you more than you would like to admit and you can’t bear to go home, I would suggest you settle down on the island of Reunion. As the southernmost of the Outermost Regions of the European Union you’ll enjoy all the comforts of home; like driving on the right and being able to use the euro as legal tender. We must warn you though, they are… French.
