The Stamm family, globe-trotting aficionados, had yet to explore Africa’s untamed allure. Enter Tara, a Rhino Africa Travel Expert, who crafted their itinerary with a sprinkle of adventure and a dash of the unexpected. The Stamm’s were all set for an epic family adventure in Southern Africa…

Spotted on Safari

The family’s escapade kicked off at the whimsically wild Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, located in the heart of South Africa’s Greater Kruger area.

This place is a superstar for its luxury safari lodges and exceptional game viewing, especially the famed Big 5 – lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and African buffaloes.

Their home base? The charming Inyati Game Lodge, overlooking the perennial Sand River – a real magnet for the animal A-listers. Imagine sipping your morning brew while a giraffe plays peek-a-boo behind the bushveld – yup, that’s a regular morning at Inyati.

But just wait until you hop onto a 4×4 for your morning and afternoon game drives…

The highlight for the family? A leopard mom, sleek as a spy, guarding her hard-earned antelope dinner, while her adorable mini-me, the cub, practised its pounce with the awkward grace of a kitten. It was like being plonked right in the middle of a live-action, fur-and-claws nature show, exclusive for Stamm’s.

“Tara, our consultant, followed up on us throughout our journey. It’s obvious that we’ll be back soon. Rhino Africa is a very good way to go for both the layout of the vacation but also the support behind it.” – Ken Stamm.

World-Class City

Next up? Cape Town, a standout among global destinations and consecutively voted one of the best cities in the world. Their base? The Labotessa Luxury Lifestyle Hotel, the epitome of elegance and personalised service.

It’s not hard to see why our Mother City repeatedly ranks among the best cities in the world

Calling Cape Town’s historic Church Square home, Labotessa is a testament to the city’s charm. Here, elegance and comfort converge, creating a surprisingly homey ambience amidst its aristocratic elegance. Every corner, from the feature walls adorned with intriguing art to the plush furniture, exudes a sense of immaculate hospitality.

The Stamm family’s exploration of Cape Town was an eclectic mix of experiences. From the dramatic scenery where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans converge at Cape Point to Bo-Kaap’s narrow lanes lined with brightly painted houses, each was steeped in culture with powerful personality.

“Truth Coffee in Cape Town is NOT ONLY a great experience, IT IS ALMOST CERTAINLY UNIQUE!” – Ken Stamm.

The Bo-Kaap neighbourhood of Cape Town has a rich and multicultural history

Cape Town is a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural depth, set against a backdrop of stunning Table Mountain and the vast sea, not to mention a history as rich as its local wine.

“We were not prepared for how good the food would be. We could’ve expected great produce, meat, fish, etc., but everywhere we stayed, the chefs were excellent. Our last two trips were to Provence and Tuscany, and we’re from Montreal (which is a foodie place) – so that’s telling you something!” – Jackie Khougaz.

Water Edge Wonder

Bidding the Mother City adieu, their adventure continued as they ventured along the Whale Route to the enchanting Hermanus Lagoon, where the family discovered the serene Mosaic Lagoon Lodge. Located just a two-hour scenic drive from Cape Town, this hidden gem is embedded in vast, pristine natural beauty.

Overlooking the tranquil lagoon waters and the imposing Kleinrivier mountains, the lodge is a sanctuary amidst an ancient milkwood forest teeming with birdlife.

Sitting right on the water’s edge, Mosaic Lagoon Lodge is a five-star retreat that warmly welcomed the Stamm’s into its luxurious, thatched abodes.

The family was embraced not just by the lodge’s comforts but also by a sense of profound appreciation for the majestic and unspoiled landscape they were about to explore.

“It’s difficult to fully capture, even in photographs, the wild and captivating beauty of the Cape and the Walker Bay Nature Reserve. The unique blend of wind, water, diverse geology, and rich flora creates a truly one-of-a-kind experience. Having witnessed it once, I am drawn to return, not just to see it again, but to immerse myself in the environment. If possible, I would like to return one day and hike the many trails.” – Ken Stamm.

A Feast of Flora

Wine lovers, rejoice! The next chapter for the Stamm family took place in the Cape Winelands at Babylonstoren. Positioned in the heart of the Cape Winelands, halfway between the quaint towns of Paarl and Franschhoek, the Stamm family found themselves on a historic farm that’s a veritable Eden.

Spend hours exploring the gardens

Babylonstoren, reminiscent of the legendary Hanging Gardens of Babylon, unfolded before them as a magical, country-style oasis in the heart of the Cape Winelands. For the Stamm family, it was an enchanting journey into a living, breathing ecosystem.

“Babylonstoren’s garden tour, led by the Gundula Deutschlander, frequently featured on Instagram, is a remarkable experience. She is one with her ecosystem, she KNOWS every plant in great detail and how the whole place interacts, how it lives together. It’s almost out of a fairy tale, your appreciation for this part of nature opens up. She is one of those people you will never forget.” – Ken Stamm.

Guided through the gardens, the family felt like they had stepped into a fairy tale, led by a guide whose knowledge and passion for nature seemed surreal – knowing every plant and how they coexist… Each plant, each vine, became characters in their adventure, revealing the delicate balance of life.

From Cascades to Classrooms

The Stamms’ final destination was Victoria Falls on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, a colossal curtain of water that plunges with a majesty that you must see to believe.

This natural wonder, often shrouded in a misty spray, presents a spectacular display of power and beauty, where rainbows arc in the sunlight against the thundering backdrop of cascading waters.

Victoria Falls will have your pulse pounding!

Amidst this splendour, the family stayed at Tongabezi Lodge, a haven of tranquillity and luxury. Set on the banks of the Zambezi River, just upstream of the Falls, the lodge offered an intimate connection with this sensational UNESCO World Heritage Site.

“The thunderous might of Victoria Falls is beyond imagination. You may think you’re prepared for its magnitude, but you most definitely are not. Equally marvellous is the fact that its surroundings remain beautifully unspoiled by excessive commercialisation.” – Ken Stamm.

The itinerary here presented a great assortment of activities – a river cruise on the Zambezi, a tour of the Falls, and a visit to a local village and the Tongabezi Trust School, which turned out to be an enlightening experience.

“Having a world-class gourmet lunch and a glass of wine next to the hippos on the legendary Zambezi is an unbelievable experience.” – Jackie Khougaz.

The Tongabezi Trust

Established in 1996, the Tongabezi Trust School emerged from the aspiration to offer a comprehensive education to disadvantaged rural children in Zambia, specifically those residing within a reachable distance on foot from the school. The aim is to give youngsters a good, well-rounded education that will really make a difference in their lives.

The Stamms’ visit to the school was a poignant reminder of the vibrant culture and community that thrives in the shadow of the Falls. This deeply impactful visit led to a heartfelt decision to sponsor a young boy’s education, an act that forged a lasting impact on the child as well as the community.

“The village visit was pretty enlightening and, when combined with the school visit, we learned that it was very easy to help out. So we ended up supporting a four-year-old boy’s education” – Ken Stamm.

In a land where each sunrise heralds new adventures, and every sunset whispers a world of possibilities, Brian and Maggie set out on a journey through four African countries. This expedition, expertly curated by their Rhino Africa travel consultant, Janine Gous, was a series of carefully selected experiences, each one building on the last, culminating in an unforgettable climax.

1. South Africa – Soweto Strolls and Time Travel

Their African saga began in JohannesburgSouth Africa, where culture and history collided on a tour through the streets of Soweto Township and within the walls of the Apartheid Museum.

The intrigue of the past paved the way for the wonders ahead – provoking the question: “What other secrets did Africa have in store?” With every need seamlessly catered for, their anticipation for the unexpected grew.

2. Zimbabwe – Victoria Falls Batonka Bliss

As dawn broke, Brian and Maggie jetted off to Zimbabwe to get but a taste of the wild and wonderful world of natural splendours of Africa. Here, they would stay at Batonka Guest Lodge, a tranquil haven away from the bustle of town but just a stone’s throw away from the main attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the mighty Victoria Falls.

The couple’s eyes sparkled with excitement as they soared above the breathtaking expanse of Victoria Falls. Their helicopter ride offered a remarkable perspective, unveiling the falls’ grandeur from the skies. But this thrilling aerial view was just the beginning…

“We started our stay in Vic Falls with a quick heli flight over the falls. What an incredible sight, a must for any trip to the falls.” – Brian.

A Feast for the Eyes

The following morning, they embarked on a journey by foot, venturing into the heart of a lush rainforest. Here, they drew closer to the falls, feeling its mist gently kiss their faces. The path wound through vibrant greenery, each step bringing them nearer to the thundering cascade.

Lunchtime found them at the bustling Lookout Café, an eatery perched to overlook panoramic views. As they indulged in a sumptuous meal, their gaze was drawn to the brave souls leaping into the gorge, their figures silhouetted against the vast chasm as they took on bungee and canyon swings.

Gin, Tonics, and Twilight

Their day of wonders was far from over. As the sun began its descent, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, they boarded a small, intimate boat for a sunset cruise. This vessel, reminiscent of the original river boats, offered a cosy and personal experience.

“Our sunset cruise on a smaller boat allowed us to get in closer to the hippos instead of the larger tour boats – a great way to see the Zambezi River!” – Maggie.

While Brian and Maggie sipped on refreshing gin and tonics, their guide navigated the waters of the Zambezi River, drawing closer to the basking hippos than the larger tour boats could ever venture. This cruise along the river’s gentle currents was a serene counterpoint to the day’s earlier exhilarations. Could anything surpass the grandeur of Victoria Falls?

3. Namibia – A Wild Welcome

The next chapter of their journey unfolded in Namibia’s Chobe Savanna Lodge. Departing Zimbabwe, their path wound through Botswana by road and river, leading them to an unexpected waterborne safari. The Chobe River was a corridor of wildlife where they marvelled at impalas, monkeys, hippos, and crocodiles.

“During our transfer from Botswana into Namibia, we were looked after all the way through the border crossings by our guides.” – Brian.

But the most magical moment was the welcoming committee of elephants before even reaching the lodge, a dream come true for Maggie. Their adventure had already been brimming with enchanting experiences, leaving them to wonder what marvels the lodge itself would hold.

Parade of Pachyderms and More

Settled on the northern banks of the Chobe River, deep in the Caprivi Strip, Chobe Savanna Lodge peered out over the floodplains of the Chobe National Park’s Puku Flats. Here, at sunrise and sunset, a bevy of beasts comes to drink just a short boat ride from the lodge.

The river offered Brian and Maggie an exceptional safari opportunity, allowing them to indulge in their fascination with elephants from a uniquely intimate vantage point. Their experience was enriched by sightings of herds of giraffes, zebras, and, as ever, the omnipresent pods of hippos and crocodile floats.

“We wanted to see the elephants, and using the river for the safari allowed us to get closer than we had ever hoped for.” – Maggie.

4. Botswana – Delta Dreams

Their journey took a thrilling turn as Brian and Maggie boarded the light aircraft destined for Camp Xakanaxa’s private airstrip, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their wilderness adventure. The allure of the Okavango Delta – a labyrinth of lagoons, channels, and islands – could not be resisted.

Nestled on the edge of the Xakanaxa Lagoon and the Khwai River, within the embrace of Moremi Game Reserve, Camp Xakanaxa (pronounced “ka-kan-a-ka”), stood as a gateway to a world where land and water met, offering a unique safari experience combining aquatic journeys and land explorations.

“We thought our thatched chalets in Chobe were good (and they were!), but the canvas tents at Xakanaxa were next level.” – Maggie.

A Boat, Birdsong, and Hippo’s Greeting

Their first evening unfolded gracefully with a sunset boat ride along the serene delta waterways. As the sun dipped below the horizon, they were enchanted by the mirror-like reflections on the water and the symphony of birdlife.

An unexpected introduction with Oscar, the camp’s resident hippo, added a touch of whimsy to their stroll back to the tent, escorted safely by their guide through the twilight.

Roars at Dawn

The next morning, their game drive was a heart-racing encounter with the rawness of nature. A mere five metres away, a pride of lions feasted on a giraffe, their roars vibrating through the air, calling to their kin.

This remarkable sight, coupled with the imposing presence of a 200-strong herd of Cape buffalo, captivated Brian and Maggie. The lions, satiated and uninterested in a buffalo breakfast, offered a rare moment of peaceful coexistence in the wild.

A Thrilling Turn

Their return to camp was interrupted by an exciting detour. Harry, their seasoned guide, had received word of a leopard sighting nearby. As they navigated the gravel roads, an elephant, guardian of its berry tree, mock-charged their vehicle in a display of wild defiance. It was a heart-pounding reminder of their place in this untamed world.

The Lion’s Goodbye

Their departure was as dramatic as their stay. En route to the airstrip, three young male lions asserted their dominance, reminding them that in the African wilderness, animals reign supreme. With two lions passing within metres of their vehicle, Brian and Maggie’s safari in Botswana concluded with an everlasting memory.

Cape Town – From Peak to Port

Their journey came full circle with a return flight to South Africa, ready to explore the colourful metropolis of Cape Town. Villa Zest Boutique Hotel would be their stylish home for the following three days.

From the awe-inspiring Table Mountain and bustling V&A Waterfront to the serene Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens were among the daily discoveries. But how would this urban exploration compare to the final leg of their journey?

“Lunch and a walk around V&A waterfront is a must, and the African Trading Port with wooden sculptures shouldn’t be missed!” – Brian.

The Greater Kruger – Land of the Big 5

In the vast expanses of the Kruger National Park, the captivating Chitwa Chitwa Game Lodge stood as the high point of their African expedition. The densely vegetated Sabi Sand Game Reserve was markedly different from their previous experiences.

“It just kept getting better, Chitwa Chitwa was the next level, absolutely fantastic!” – Brian.

Their first safari drive in this new setting was a spectacle of wildlife, with the sighting of rhinos and leopards completing their Big 5 checklist. The reserve buzzed with diverse wildlife like elephants, lions, kudus, zebras, the ubiquitous impalas, and hyenas, including a playful baby hyena.

Leopard Spotting

The thick brush of this terrain presented a challenging task for tracking, but the expertise of their guide, Daniel, and tracker, Beth, shone through, revealing the hidden wonders of this wild land. This area, particularly favourable for leopards, offered them repeated sightings of these majestic big cats.

“This was the place for leopards  again and again, we saw them on multiple drives.” – Maggie.

Sabi Sand Game Reserve has carved out legendary status amid 160,000 acres of leopard-rich land

Moonlit Mischief

As the evening unfolded, the walks back to their lodging transformed into thrilling encounters, not with hippos as before, but with prowling hyenas active around the lodge. The wild was at their doorstep, yet the reassuring presence of their guides ensured safe passage in the dark.

Clash of the Canids

Their guide, Daniel, inquiring about their specific interests, heard their eagerness to see African wild dogs, known for their scarcity. Setting expectations, he mentioned their rare sightings. However, the next morning, in a stroke of luck amidst the early mist, they encountered a pack of wild dogs, an experience that left them astounded.

Their tracker, Beth, with his deep knowledge of the land, led a thrilling chase through the bush. The journey was no longer a gentle drive but an exhilarating pursuit, culminating in a dramatic scene.

A pack of hyenas, cunning and opportunistic, had trailed the wild dogs, hoping to usurp their kill. Suddenly, they found themselves amidst a fierce clash between the wild dogs and hyenas. The wild dogs, with their remarkable agility and speed, soon sent the hyenas fleeing.

Precision Meets Passion

Reflecting on their journey, the meticulous planning of their Travel Expert, Janine, became evident. Each destination had elegantly built upon the last, leading to a series of climactic experiences. Their African journey, packed with suspense, beauty, and unexpected delights, was a narrative they would cherish for years.

“When we look back at our adventure, it seems that Janine chose accommodation and experiences in a very specific way… and built up to the best for last! It was the perfect order. We were so impressed with everything.” – Brian.

“The excitement and joy that we both felt throughout this whole trip is undeniable! We can’t thank you enough for this once-in-a-lifetime dream come true! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!” – Maggie.

Silvan Safari’s Sublime Transformation

At Rhino Africa, we’ve got our binoculars dialled dead-on when it comes to the tiniest nuances of luxury travel. And we’ll tell you, something has been stirring in the Greater Kruger. One of our favourite lodges, Silvan Safari, has cloaked itself in secrecy for a little while now – shrouded from the public gaze – but our vigilant eyes have been tracking every subtle shift, and finally, something miraculous has emerged!

Silvan Safari offers mindful luxury in the heart of the wilderness

A Thunderstruck Vision

It all started with a thunderstorm unleashing torrential fury upon the lodge last December. In the midst of the clamour of thunder and downpour of rain, David Ryan, the owner and creator of Silvan Safari, saw not chaos but the cocoon from which a magnificent transformation would arise.

A small detail in one of Silvan’s artworks

The storm had stripped away Silvan Safari’s familiar facade, leaving behind a canvas primed for reinvention. It was an opportunity for the luxury safari lodge to shed its former aesthetic, ready to rise reborn, revitalised, and more deeply connected to the surrounding wilderness of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve.

The Little Details Defining Excellence

What we’ve always loved about Silvan Safari is its unwavering devotion to the finer details – those delightful surprises that take your experience to the next level. Owner, design guru, and chief decorator David Ryan knows it well. He’s the visionary behind the scenes, orchestrating every aspect of the recent refurbishments.

Paper and book artwork

All artworks aim to celebrate the particular environs around Silvan Safari

As David puts it, “the little details make Silvan Safari truly unique.” He’s personally handpicked and participated in the design of every element in the upgrades. To him, these details aren’t just mere embellishments; they’re the heartbeat of the experience – and we’re right there with him!

Everything at Silvan Safari is very particularly curated

Tree-Inspired Indoor Sophistication

Silvan Safari’s design philosophy has always celebrated the natural beauty of the Sabi Sand, and the refurbishments have stayed true to this ethos.

And, for those fortunate enough to have experienced the lodge’s luxury suites, you’ll recall the harmonious hues and subtle textures that celebrate the very trees that lend their name and beauty to each room.

Silvan Safari is a space entwined in the rhythm of the bush

Now, picture an evolution of design where restyled curtains and mosquito nets unfurl like delicate wings, introducing a refreshing burst of colour complementing the suite’s indigenous roots (pun intended!).

Opulent headboards, carpets, and wallpaper have also had a complete makeover – adding a dash of distinctive charisma which breathes new life into the very essence of Silvan Safari’s aesthetic.

Silvan Safari Cassia Suite

The Cassia Suite reflects the attention to design shown throughout Silvan Safari

Considerable Creature Comforts

Oh my! Are those custom Casamento couches we spy? Prepare to be pampered because furnishings have never looked so affluent!

As you step into Silvan Safari’s suites, you’ll be greeted by Casamento couches, plush dining chairs and other impressive fixtures – each adorned with bespoke embroidery that pays homage to the fauna and flora of the region.

After a chaotic storm, new ideas started to sprout

From Beds, Baths and Beyond!

New, sumptuous beds draped with high-quality Mungo linen ensure you are enveloped in sheer indulgence. But that’s just the tip of the rhino horn. Each suite has seen a floor-to-ceiling bathroom facelift. Every element, from fixtures to flooring and even the signature artwork, has been thoughtfully reimagined.

Designed for exceptional space, comfort and uncompromising luxury

This attention to detail guarantees a harmonious atmosphere, perfectly in line with Silvan Safari’s reputation as the World’s Leading Luxury Lodge. What better place to stay for your Big 5 safari?

Enhancing Al Fresco Experiences

And that’s not all. The Tree Wisteria Suite has something a little extra in store for you! Silvan Safari has extended its viewing deck, and guess what they’ve added? An oh-so-glamorous outdoor bath. Yes, now you can soak in style while gazing out at the Manyeleti riverbed.

And speaking about extra surprises, one of the standout changes you won’t want to miss is the extension of the lodge’s walkway. Guests staying in the Tree Wisteria or the Leadwood Suite are in for a treat. You can now indulge in leisurely strolls along a raised boardwalk, offering a whole new perspective of the wilderness around you.

Reimagining Luxury Travel

When reflecting on the refurbishments, David’s enthusiasm is palpable: “I’m beyond proud of what the team achieved. I believe that this refreshed and rejuvenated Silvan Safari is every bit as intentional, connected and inspired as when I first dreamed of it when walking along the Manyeleti riverbed.”

We’ve witnessed Silvan Safari’s inspiring evolution, diligently tracking every nuanced shift from secrecy to revelation. It has emerged not as a mere lodge but as a thunderstruck vision with details so delicate even a butterfly will swoon.

We invite you to experience this miraculous metamorphosis first-hand and let Silvan Safari ignite your own transformation amidst the wild wonders of Africa.

From Leopard Dinner Parties to Lion Love Triangles, Belinda Hit the Safari Jackpot!

Prepare to be green with envy as we delve into our guest Belinda Beale’s extraordinary safari sightings that will make any wildlife enthusiast weak at the knees. Even with our own extensive safari experiences, we must admit that Belinda truly struck gold in the safari jackpot department – and yes, she has jaw-dropping pictures to prove it! Join us as we unveil the astonishing adventures that unfolded before Belinda’s lucky eyes.

Opulent Lodgings in “The Land Before Time”

Belinda’s adventure at Londolozi in Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve was no ordinary safari in South Africa. From the moment she arrived, she sensed something delightfully unconventional was in store for her. After a leisurely late lunch, the guide and tracker graciously allowed her to settle into her room at Londolozi’s Varty Camp. And it was like stepping into a whimsical dreamland.

And oh, what a dream it was! The first game drive transported Belinda (and some of her fellow Londolozi guests) to a wildlife utopia. As they ventured onto an open plain, Belinda’s eyes widened at the sight that greeted her – elephants grazing like leisurely giants, zebras zipping through the grass, giraffes strutting with their long necks held high, and a parade of wildebeests, impalas, and warthogs too.

“I felt like we had found the hidden valley in “The Land Before Time”. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to have such an abundance and variety of animals together in one area.” – Belinda Beale

But wait, there was more. Belinda’s luck knew no bounds as they stumbled upon a mother rhino and her adorable little munchkin indulging in a grassy feast. Their guide, practically bursting with excitement, confessed it had been ages since he last laid eyes on a baby rhino. A rare and moving sighting indeed!

Leopard Dinner Party for Two

The excitement only intensified as their guide and tracker furthered their safari mission to find a leopard who had a particular penchant for impala suppers. And find they did! A male leopard sat triumphantly on a tree branch, gnawing away at its savoury prize. But brace yourselves – because lurking beneath the leafy banquet was another male leopard, eagerly awaiting a dinner party invitation.

Who would have thought that leopards, known for their solitary nature, could have such social aspirations? Well, in reality, they don’t – making this moment even more of a rarity. However, when it comes to sharing a meal, even the smallest of leftovers will suffice for these cunning creatures. After all, why dine alone when you can have a taste of the leopard’s version of a dinner party?

“There was another male leopard at the base of the tree, waiting for whatever scraps may have fallen from above. Inevitably, this did happen, and we sat quietly watching a male leopard sitting in the tree and one on the ground feeding on the same impala.” – Belinda Beale

Stars, Stories, and Safari Magic

As twilight cast its enchanting spell, Belinda found herself surrounded by the cosy embrace of the boma back at Varty Camp, where a crackling fire and a constellation of flickering lanterns set the mood. Underneath the starry sky, she shared tales of her wild encounters with fellow guests.

The air buzzed with elation as everyone relished in the magic of the moment. And just when Belinda thought it couldn’t get any better, the chef himself swooped in, offering an in-depth tour of the dinner options. It was a feast fit for an adventurous soul, a crescendo to an unforgettable day on safari.

“We had dinner in the boma with a warm, open fire and lanterns everywhere, making the atmosphere feel magical and intimate. It was an amazing experience to be sitting outdoors under the starlit sky, sharing stories with the other guests to compare stories on what we saw that afternoon.” – Belinda Beale

A Barrage of Buffalo

On another unforgettable day, a massive herd of migrating buffalos made their way through the area, with an estimated 300 to 400 buffalos. As the sun set, the buffalos gathered at a watering hole, providing a sight to behold. Belinda found herself surrounded by these tenacious beasts, their presence both awe-inspiring and humbling. It was a fitting end to yet another incredible day in the wilds of Africa.

“We made our way to the watering hole, and it was as if ‘the director’ called “action!” Because, exactly on cue, hundreds of buffalo funnelled their way through to drink and a bath in the waterhole. Our vehicle was surrounded by them, and at no stage did the animals or tourists feel threatened.” – Belinda Beale

Not-So-Distant Roars of Rivals

With the arrival of a new dawn, the world outside Belinda’s window stirred with roars fit for a royal court. Eager to uncover the source of these regal calls, she joined her fellow explorers on the deck, sipping her morning coffee in anticipation. Soon thereafter, their morning game drive led them to the male lion, lying nonchalantly beside the road, his face battered and blood-stained from what seemed a savage brawl.

Belinda was excited to find out where the roars were coming from, Image Credit: Belinda Beale

“I was actually the first to see the male lion and yelled for the guide to stop. He was lying right beside the road but had not crossed the dirt track, so the tracker had not noticed any prints. The lion had clearly been in an altercation as he had fresh blood oozing from his mouth and had scratches all over his face.” – Belinda Beale

Then, gazing further across the bushveld, they could see a male and female lion engaged in a fierce debate over the lioness’s heart. The drama unfolded before their eyes, a wild soap opera with a bush backdrop. Admittingly, the onlookers found it hard to look away as they witnessed a mating ritual that could rival any passionate telenovela.

Lion and lioness

There can only be one king of the bush

Big 5 and Beyond

Having triumphantly checked off the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo), Belinda wondered if the safari magic would lose its sparkle. Oh, how wrong she was! Every subsequent drive became an encore of exhilaration. They journeyed through different terrains, crossed waterways teeming with the grinning faces of hippos and crocodiles.

“Our stay at Londolozi exceeded my expectations beyond belief. Being fortunate to see the Big 5 on our first two drives, I wondered how each additional drive could possibly compete.” – Belinda Beale

Soon, they stumbled upon a boisterous pride of lions. The family portrait of felines included two proud kings, four fierce lionesses, and a mischievous litter of nine cubs. The cuteness overload was palpable as the cubs tumbled, tussled, and bounded around like pint-sized acrobats. But it wasn’t all child’s play…

The Mystery of the Lioness’s Sudden Spring

One morning, they came across the pride again, now missing the two males. Suddenly, one of the lionesses sprang! And, with a burst of adrenaline, she darted into the undergrowth, disappearing like a streak of golden lightning. At the same time, the wise matriarch skillfully guarded the mischievous cubs while the other three lionesses faithfully trailed behind the first.

Their safari guide deftly steered their vehicle through the rugged terrain, the guests’ hearts pounding with anticipation. The chase was on, a thrilling quest to uncover the enigma that ignited the lioness’s sudden movement. Belinda and her safari companions clung to the edge of their seats, determined to keep pace with the drama unfolding.

And then, like a glorious revelation, they stumbled upon the prize – a freshly claimed warthog kill. Not long after that, as if in a choreographed symphony of nature, the elder lioness and the cubs arrived at the feeding site, completing the circle of life in a mesmerising display of survival and instinct.

A Deeper Connection

Each sunrise and sunset in Londolozi painted the sky with breathtaking hues, casting an enchanting allure over the African landscape. Looking back, Belinda cherished the bond she had formed with her guide and tracker, allowing for comfortable communication and a deeper connection to the wilderness. They even shared some meals together, adding a personal touch and creating lasting, meaningful memories.

For those of us who know and love Londolozi, we appreciate that it has been a beacon of excellence in the African safari industry since its inception in the 1970s. Having recently had the pleasure of visiting their new Founders Camp, I was once again reminded of Londolozi’s commitment towards providing guests with a truly unique and unforgettable African experience. Here’s what I experienced at their new Founders Camp…

The Londolozi Difference

What truly sets Londolozi apart from any other safari lodge is their deep sense of community and family or, as I like to refer to it, the “secret sauce” as to why Londolozi is more than just a luxury safari experience – it’s a feeling!

The new Londolozi Founders Camp aims to not only immerse guests in the beauty of the African wilderness but also to engage them in the rich and fascinating history of the safari industry. It’s evident that the team at Londolozi believes that a key part of their success lies in the relationships they have built with their resident Londolozi community. And it’s this sense of togetherness that they so authentically share with all Londolozi guests.

An Interactive Safari Experience

In my opinion, what is truly unique about Londolozi is that they are one of the only safari lodges that not only showcase their “back of house” but actively invite guests to visit and engage in it. At the new Founders Camp, guests can take part in daily behind-the-scenes tours, providing a glimpse into the workings of the camp and the lives of the staff who make the magic all possible.

This is a rare opportunity for guests to see first-hand the various tasks involved in running a successful and sustainable safari lodge. From waste and water management all the way through to sustainable energy and a Learning Center where everyone is encouraged to be the very best version of themselves.

New Founders Camp Interior Design

Apart from the fascinating insights into Londolozi’s operations and community, the new Londolozi Founders Camp has clearly been thoughtfully redesigned with luxury, family and comfort in mind. The camp consists of six exquisite river facing chalets, 3 family chalets and one family suite perched high above the Sand River, each with its own private deck and heated plunge pool, providing guests with the peace and tranquillity they need to unwind from this busy world between game drives. Once again, Shan Varty and her team of experts have created a signature Londolozi style that blends Londolozi’s heritage with modern luxury.

Going The Extra Mile with Game Drives

The exclusivity of game drives at Londolozi needs little introduction and is a unique experience. The expert rangers and trackers, for which Londolozi is renowned, are some of the best in the industry. They are incredibly passionate about sharing their knowledge and love of the African bush with guests – from tracking leopards to observing the majestic elephants; the game drives are a true bucket-list experience that guests will never forget.

Are you dreaming about answering Africa’s call? At Rhino Africa, we’re all about exceptional experiences and making a positive impact in the world, and boy, oh boy, do we have a deep-seated passion for Africa! Therefore, everything we do is infused with that love, and we hope to pass the same adoration for this stunning continent that we call home to our guests. And this brings us to Lindy’s soul-stirring story…

african-travel-at-silvan

Our wish for you is to experience and fall in love with Africa just as we have

Meet Lindy…

Allow us to introduce you to a lovely lady named Lindy. Lindy is a valued guest of ours who’s been bitten by the Africa bug – and hard! Her love for Africa runs deep and is a shining example of why we do what we do.

Once Bitten, Forever Smitten

Lindy and her hubby Ed first stepped on African soil waaay back in 2000. And let’s tell you, the spell of Africa really took an enchanting hold. That pivotal year marked the beginning of a lifelong affair with the continent’s wonderful landscapes, wildlife and people that captured their hearts.

Leopard in a tree at Silvan Safari

It’s hard to resist answering Africa’s call

After that very first trip back in 2000, the loving couple returned home to the United States. However, as years passed, the magnetic pull of Africa never waned, and they longed to return. Finally, over ten years later, they succumbed to their desires and embarked on a long-awaited reunion in 2013.

Since then, Lindy and Ed planned annual pilgrimages to Africa, traversing the likes of Namibia, Botswana, Tanzania, Kenya, and beyond up until 2019.

Then, in 2020, Ed sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer.

A Shared Love

Despite the devastating loss of her beloved husband, Lindy’s adoration for Africa remained undiminished. And in 2021, she bravely embarked on her first solo expedition. Remarkably, even in the absence of Ed, their fond memories remained with Lindy, and Africa still possessed that special magic.

Her experiences on this trip were profoundly moving, prompting her to return not once but twice in the following year, 2022. Furthermore, she has even more African escapades planned for 2023.

“Our shared love of Africa is a main part of what continues to draw me back.” – Lindy

A Tapestry of African Tales

To give you a genuine appreciation for the transformative power of Africa, we wanted to share one of Lindy’s captivating journeys. However, it’s difficult to single out a specific African adventure that stands above the rest. Each experience is unique and remarkable in its own way, and we could write countless stories about them (stay tuned!).

But let’s begin by offering you a glimpse into her most recent excursion last October. She ventured into the vibrant city of Cape Town, immersing themselves in its rich culture and breathtaking scenery. Afterwards, they embarked on a thrilling adventure, indulging in a Big 5 safari in the Great Kruger National Park.

Cape Town

Accompanied by her cousin, Roselle, Lindy embarked on an epic trip to South Africa – jam-packed with exhilarating exploits and opulent indulgences. Their odyssey kicked off at the Victoria & Alfred Hotel, a place where antiquity and extravagance intertwine, located right in the pulse of Cape Town’s iconic V&A Waterfront.

“Cape Town is so vibrant and beautiful with Table Mountain in the background along the promenades near the Waterfront. It’s one of my favourite cities in the world, and I love relaxing here before heading out into the bush.  For part of this trip, I was joined by my cousin, Roselle, on her first trip to Africa.” – Lindy

At this landmark destination, they were swept away by the irresistible charm of the city, soaking in magnificent panoramas of the harbour and Table Mountain. From hanging out with the adorable penguins of Boulders Beach to visiting the whimsical and windy Cape of Good Hope, they were enthralled by the vibrant energy our Mother City is famed for.

Following their memorable time in Cape Town, Lindy and Roselle embarked on a journey to the exquisite Ngala Tented Camp, nestled within the exclusive Timbavati Game Reserve. This remarkable reserve boasts a seamless connection with the renowned Kruger National Park, with no physical barriers between them.

In this idyllic setting, they embarked on an unparalleled safari experience, melting away in the opulence of their luxury tented camp amidst the African bush.

Londolozi Varty Camp

With a bittersweet farewell to Roselle, Lindy embarked solo on the final chapter of her journey. Eagerly, she stepped into the prestigious embrace of Londolozi Varty Camp, an esteemed lodge in Kruger’s Sabi Sand Game Reserve. Renowned for the Big 5, particularly lots and lots of leopards, Londolozi promised an unforgettable experience.

She witnessed majestic elephants gracefully roaming the savannah and observed leopards skillfully navigating through dense foliage. A familiar favourite of Lindy’s, Londolozi Varty Camp served as the perfect conclusion to yet another amazing adventure in Africa.

“Londolozi is a magical place that I return to as often as possible. The people are amazing and the gaming is some of the best in the Sabi Sand. Londolozi is known for its leopards and my latest trip lived up to the lodge’s reputation.” – Lindy

“I enjoyed another great experience – seeing a hyena den with cubs playing outside. What a treat! You can’t help but smile at these adorable creatures! They aren’t as adorable as adults, but hyenas do fulfil a vital role in the ecosystem.” – Lindy

Africa’s Real Lion KINGS

I had my first experience of meeting Africa’s lion kings at the ripe young age of seven. However, it was sadly not on safari but when my family and family friends, with their own offspring in tow, hit the drive-in to bear witness to none other than the legendary “The Lion King” animation film. And let me tell you, no other movie has etched itself into my brain like that masterpiece of classics. But in real, tangible Africa, there are some mighty lion kings worthy of their own feature films…

Very young lion cub sitting alone on a rock

Who could forget one of the most loved animated films of all time featuring Africa’s lion kings

“Before Sunrise, He’s Your Son.”

If you’ve also watched “The Lion King”, we’re sure you too were entranced by the epic tale of Simba’s rise to kinghood under the wise tutelage of his father, Mufasa! Oh, and the coolest mandrill on the savannah, Rafiki, of course! The cultural impact of this movie spans generations. But you know what’s wild? As much as we love Simba and Mufasa, the real animal kingdom is way more complex than that.

Large male lion with his cub

The unforgettable father and son bond between “The Lion King”‘s Mufasa and Simba

“Well, Forgive Me for Not Leaping for Joy. Bad Back, You Know.”

Fast forward a few decades, and that movie still held pride of place in our living room cabinet, thanks to a trusty ol’ VHS tape. Remember those? The black boxes housing a mystical sheeny tape coiled tightly around white spindles? Ah, the nostalgia. But I digress.

The point is, over ten years and countless rewatches later, my brain developed, and my empathy deepened. And I started feeling a bit sorry for poor Uncle Scar, despite the fact that he sent his big bro tumbling to his death in a stampede of frantic wildebeest (not exactly a cool move, Scar!). But something about this scrawny, scarred-up lion still pulled at my heartstrings…

Close up of a lion with many scars on his face

You’ll be surprised how many of Africa’s lion kings look “Scar-like” in the real animal kingdom

“There’s More to Being a King…”

In fact, here at Rhino Africa, we know that, in real life, characters like Scar – who are seemingly cold-blooded and cunning – feature more often than one would expect. Parts of his character ring true in many lion pride dynamics. However, it’s important to remember that, in the animal kingdom, it’s all part of survival and, ultimately, the “circle of life”.

From Mufasas to Scars, there are many lions in Africa that can be considered true “lion kings” for their strength, leadership, and, yes, even ruthlessness. That being said, let’s take a look at some of Africa’s most iconic lions and why they’ve earned the title of “The Lion King”.

Meet Africa’s real lion kings on safari

Scarface – The Adored Savannah Sovereign

When it comes to the topic of Scar, it’s worth mentioning another mighty lion whose name bears a striking resemblance, namely Scarface. This male lion, known for the massive scar above his right eye, lived in Kenya’s famous Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Scarface reigned over many prides throughout his life

Scarface was the king of his domain, along with his three brothers – Morani, Sikio, and Hunter – who were lovingly dubbed the “Four Musketeers”. But Scarface, in particular, captivated the world with his unique appearance and winning personality. He was a star of many wildlife documentaries, including the BBC’s Big Cats Diary and National Geographic shows. Heck, he even had his own Facebook page!

Sadly, Scarface’s reign came to an end on June 11, 2021, when he passed away at the ripe old age of 14. His demise was due to old age, which is just further proof of how tough this lion was – he went out on his own terms, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most beloved lions in Kenya.

Scarface became one of Africa’s lion kings that were beloved by millions

Notch – The Fallen King Keeps Rising

The Maasai Mara is a wild wonderland where the Great Wildebeest Migration brings a stampede of hooves and horns that shake the earth. But for a decade, one mighty lion and his offspring ruled supreme over the savannah. Notch took over the Marsh Pride in 2004 in a legendary showdown that was captured on the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries.

However, his rule was short-lived when he was dethroned in 2007. Many thought that the lion king’s days were numbered. But Notch had other plans. He roamed far and wide, blazing a trail of courage and cunning, until he found his five sub-adult sons and rallied them to his side.

Notch, one of Kenya’s most resilient lion kings

Their ferocity and finesse were etched into the pages of history in Disney’s African Cats, where Notch and his heirs clashed with the fearsome Fang, a lion of unparalleled might and menace. The film captured the spine-tingling moments when the Notch coalition, bathed in the golden glow of the sunset, marched towards Fang’s domain, ready to unleash their fury. They were victorious.

Notch himself passed away at the age of 14 in 2013, but his legacy lives on. His sons, who had grown strong and skilled under his watchful eye, kept him safe and well-fed until the end. Notch may be gone, but his spirit still roams the Maasai Mara, a testament to the enduring power of courage, strength, and love.

Bob and Ziggy – Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Traversing over to Tanzania, two legendary lions ruled Namiri Plains in the Serengeti National Park. All rise and due reverence to King Bob and Ziggy! These two savannah kings were the rockstars of their time, with their black-maned dreadlocks giving them a look worthy of the great Bob Marley and Ziggy Marley themselves.

From 2008 to 2017, they ruled over multiple prides with an iron paw, passing down their superstar genes and dashing good looks to their offspring. And boy, oh boy, did they have many…

Bob’s cub, Bob Junior, inherited his father’s impressive black mane but with a sleek and stylish twist, making him the envy of all the other lions. But don’t be fooled by his boyish good looks because Bob Junior was a force to behold.

When Bob Junior lost his pride to two other male lions in 2018, he didn’t waver. Instead, he teamed up with a younger and equally gorgeous male, whom the locals fondly knighted “Bob’s Friend” or “The Bullet”. Together, they won back their pride after two months of being missing in action, which is a lion feat that we have never heard of before.

Cecil the Lion – The King of Conservation

Cecil the Lion was a majestic creature that roamed the plains of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. He was a symbol of strength and beauty, a leader among his pride, and a favourite of tourists and researchers alike. His life story, though tragic in its end, continues to inspire people around the world.

From the moment of his birth in the early 2000s, Cecil displayed an unmistakable air of distinction. His striking, luscious mane set him apart from other lions, and his calm and confident demeanour marked him as a natural ruler.

Closeup of Cecil the majestic lion

Cecil could just be the most famous lion ever to walk the plains of Africa

In 2009, along with his coalition brother, Jericho, Cecil faced a grave challenge when the two encountered another established pride. Sadly, Jericho was killed, and Cecil sustained severe injuries. However, even after fleeing, Cecil’s fortitude prevailed, and he later formed his own pride of 20 members strong.

Strong and loyal Jericho, long live his memory

Cecil’s Struggles

Throughout his life, Cecil confronted many dangers, including predators, diseases, and human encroachment. Sadly, it was the latter that ultimately led to his untimely death. In 2015, he was illegally hunted and killed by an American dentist, Walter Palmer. The news of Cecil’s tragic end reverberated around the world, sparking outrage and prompting a call to action to protect endangered species and preserve the natural world.

Despite the tragedy of his death, Cecil’s memory and legacy endure, reminding us of his true status as one of Africa’s lion kings. His courage and unwavering spirit continue to inspire people around the world. Cecil was a true king, and his story will always be a powerful symbol of the importance of conservation and the value of every living creature.

Meet the Mapogo Lions – Six Ferocious Kings

The Mapogo lion coalition, made infamous by the acclaimed wildlife documentary, “Brothers in Blood: The Lions of the Sabi Sand”, is a notorious band of brothers that embarked on a ruthless quest to dominate and rule the Sabi Sand Game Reserve of the Kruger National Park in South Africa.

The six lions of the Mapogo coalition

Comprised of six male lions, led by Makulu, the coalition included Dreadlocks, Prettyboy, Rasta, Kinky Tail, and the infamous Mr. T (named after the iconic Mr. T character from “The A-Team” due to his brutal nature and striking Mohawk hairstyle). In March 2006, they boldly claimed an impressive 70,000 hectares of territory by force, displaying their dominance with unprecedented aggression.

Mr T got his name from his classic hairstyle resembling that of the Mr T character

Unlike other lion coalitions, who usually enter new areas discreetly, the Mapogo clan made their presence known with great authority. Their sizable advantage of six members allowed them to rule over eight prides, completely changing the hierarchy of the entire Sabi Sand ecosystem.

The coalition ruled a large territory, but behind their massive power lay a tumultuous underbelly of internal competition and rivalry. Their dominance continued for years, but cracks started to form, and bonds started to break.

Eventually, in 2012, while roaming alone, Mr T was outnumbered and killed by a rival coalition, the Selatis. After this, the rest of the Mapogo lions slowly split and mysteriously disappeared, marking the end of their legendary reign.

“The Great Kings of the Past Look Down on Us…”

While “The Lion King” may be a beloved classic, nothing compares to the tales of Africa’s REAL lion kings. These majestic beasts reign supreme with stories of unwavering strength and fierce leadership. And although some of these legends have passed on, their legacy lives on through their “grown-cubs” and “grand-cubs.”

Witness their descendants rule the wilds of Africa to this day, experience the majesty of “The Lion King” in its truest form, and start planning your own unforgettable lion safari in Africa!

From taking in the incomparable beauty of an African sunrise to feasting on delectable culinary delights, a safari at Silvan Safari is all about celebrating one-of-a-kind, extraordinary experiences. I had the time of my life dining at Silvan, where happiness was served on fine china covered in decadent Amarula ice cream. So, buckle up and get ready, our gastronomic journey is about to begin!

Silvan – the perfect safari for foodies

Entrée: Silvan’s Food Philosophy

Dining at Silvan is a culinary experience that celebrates fresh, local ingredients inspired by the breathtaking natural surroundings. Chef Terror Lekopa takes great care when planning each menu to accentuate the dining at Silvan. As a result, each dish on the menu is carefully considered based on every guest’s dietary preferences, as well as appropriateness to the season and weather. Therefore, no detail is overlooked!

Chef Terror’s personal and approachable dishes are the perfect pairing for Silvan Safari’s stunning setting. He spent some time in Nice, France, where he was taught by South Africa’s first Michelin star awarded chef, Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. During this time, Chef Terror learnt the art of transforming local and traditional South African recipes into exceptional dishes. And today, he prepares and presents them in a way that shows how simplistic dishes can be both luxurious and oh-so-tasty!

Mains: Pièce de Résistance When Dining at Silvan

After a Silvan Safari game drive, it would be an understatement to say that you work up quite the appetite. Our lovely butler, Phindi, leads us to our seating under the Jackalberry trees. Here, we find our table laden with a beautiful continental array of fresh fruits, buttery croissants, cheese and more. But that’s only the start, as the warm breakfast is still to come!

Whether you enjoy your meal on the majestic Jackalberry tree-shrouded lower breakfast deck, under the outdoor gazebos, or in the Modjaji dining room, you’re in for a treat.

Lunch is light because, let’s face it, you can only eat so much – even when dining at Silvan! The options range from a tender chicken and peppadew salad to incredibly crispy lamb chops with buttery vegetables.

However, dinner is the real star of the show. And it’s a three-course meal to satisfy all of your sweet and savoury cravings. Perfectly crispy pan-fried calamari, succulent beef fillet, creamy homemade tonka-bean ice cream – it’s a foodie’s fantasy!

Palate Cleanser: Dining at Silvan Just Gets Better and Better

But dining at Silvan isn’t just about the mains. Each room has its own mini-bar stocked to the brim with homemade snacks, drinks and mixes. I wholeheartedly recommend trying the candied nuts and droëwors – a dried version of the well-known South African sausage, boerewors. It’s absolutely delicious… which I confirm since I finished both jars when refilled each day!

Of course, we can’t forget about drinks. Silvan’s team of super butlers make – hands down – the best gin and tonics in the Sabi Sand! And with over 30 different gins from around the world to choose from, there’s something for everyone.

Drinks at Silvan are always delightful

In true Silvan fashion, afternoon high-tea brings an oh-so-scrumptious spread of snacks and divine drinks. For example, you can expect anything from cakes to pastries (and even bao buns!). So, your taste buds are guaranteed to sing!

If you pass on a drink at high tea, you won’t be thirsty for long! Sundowners at Silvan is a spectacular affair. The bush comes alive with the gathering of wildlife at the watering hole for a final sip. At the same time,  guests also get enjoy a drink of their own!

The Cherry on Top

Each moment spent on a safari is special, but some really do stand out. Dining at Silvan is an elaborate affair that will never disappoint. Always served in style, each meal is unique in its own way. And some more so than others!

Did I hear someone mention breakfast in the bush? In a clearing not too far from camp, the Silvan team sets up for breakfast in the heart of the Sabi Sand. And it’s so surreal to enjoy a perfectly poached egg while watching a nyala graze only a few metres away.

A true Silvan style bush breakfast

Breakfast in the bush is an experience like no other

Hosted in an exquisite lantern-lit “enchanted forest”, we also get the chance to experience Silvan’s Moroccan feast! The setting is moody and magical. But, more importantly, the food, oh the food! There’s a spread of fresh bread, zaalouk, tagine, hummus, fragrant sauces, and many more tasty dishes to devour. All food fit for royalty!

Silvan’s meals are usually served at the main lodge. However, you can also enjoy them on your private deck. Or, even better, the Manyeleti River bed. A hop, a skip and a jump from the lodge, and you’re out in nature, having the fine-dining experience of your dreams. Furthermore, you have the best soundtrack of hyenas laughing and owls hooting. It’s simply spectacular!
