Wade the Waterways of the Okavango Delta

Botswana’s Okavango Delta offers stunning exploration. This labyrinth of winding canals spans more than 16,000 square kilometres and is the world’s largest inland river delta. A watery showground, it’s best travelled by a traditional dugout canoe called a mokoro. Thanks to this charming transportation mode, you can feast your eyes on Botswana’s wildlife, while immersed in seclusion and nature.

The Delta’s diverse habitat houses creatures such as the lion, elephant, hippo, zebra and leopard and accommodations such as Camp Moremi and Vumbura Plains Camp offer front-row seats to this wildlife spectacle. Camp Moremi, an elevated thatch and timbre structure built on the edge of a lagoon, is situated in the Xakanaka area of Moremi Game Reserve. With decadent facilities and exclusive safari tents, each sited on a raised platform overlooking the Xakanaxa Lagoon, it provides one of the most unforgettable romantic African experiences. Vumbura Plains Camp, which is situated in a private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, consists of two separate lodges of 7 tented suites each. Its location is ideal for delta exploration, whether by Mokoro, delta boat, open-air 4×4 vehicle or on foot and certain glimpses of lion, cheetah, leopard and more.

Disappear to a Private Paradise

Mozambique has some of the most beautiful beaches in Africa; beaches so idyllic, turquoise and pristine that they rival a picture. In addition to gorgeous, unspoiled settings, this country has a range of paradise-like hideaways that are ideal for a couple that’s after romantic African experiences by the sea.

The Bazaruto Archipelago, dubbed ‘the pearl of the Indian Ocean’ is undoubtedly the most popular tourist spot in Mozambique. Coupled-up pairs looking for a bit more intimacy and exclusivity might enjoy the Bazaruto Archipelago, one of the most remote beach destinations around, just a bit more. With white sandy beaches, tropical waters, leafy palm trees and opportunities for scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming, dhow cruises and more, it is one of the most blissful romantic African experiences available.

The Quirimbas getaway is often described as “Robinson Crusoe-like” due to its limited number of tourists and epic setting. Azura Benguerra Island, a tropical paradise surrounded by white beaches, is a quality location for a couple looking to make memories that’ll last. Luxury beach-front villas offer guests opportunities for scuba-diving, snorkelling and other water-based activities, including pure relaxation on its white sandy shores.

Jen and Scott’s Impromptu Proposal in Africa

Botswana,Special Features,Zambia,Zimbabwe

Here at Rhino Africa, we absolutely LOVE hearing our traveller’s tales about their trips to Africa. And in the spirit of the month of love, one story really stands out. Here is the heartwarming tale of an impromptu proposal in Africa.

Proposal at sunset

Africa is a romantic rendezvous surrounded by Mother Nature

It Started with a Wedding

“The trip was originally to go to a wedding. Jen did her gap year in Botswana, and one of her housemates stayed on and was getting married. Thus Brycewana 2016 was born!” – Leslie Bryce.

Get ready to hear a tale of wild wanderlust and unexpected family undertakings…

Once upon a time, a band of intrepid explorers (aka the Bryce family) set off for Botswana, or as they called it, “Brycewana 2016” – an epic escapade with a seriously snazzy name.

The gang’s main mission? To attend a wedding, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. Among the merry travellers were the dynamic duo (and cutest couple), Jen and Scott, who brought their A-game to the adventure.

But wait, there’s more! Jen’s father, Richard, hailed from Zimbabwe, so the gang kicked off their journey in Zimbabwe and Zambia, taking in the stunning scenery of Victoria Falls!

Victoria Falls

So there they were, a clan of eight, soaking up the majestic sights of Victoria Falls – that wonder of wonders, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and all-around jaw-dropper. And boy, oh boy, there’s no shortage of shenanigans to be had here!

For the thrill-seekers among us, there’s Devil’s Pool – a heart-racing swim on the brink of the Falls – as well as bungee jumping, zip-lining, and micro lighting. But if you’re after something a little less wild, fear not! The region also offers sunset cruises, marvellous walking tours, and so much more.

Once our favourite family had their fill of wonder and waterfalls, the real magic materialised when making their way into the untamed wilderness of Botswana. With a little help from Rhino Africa’s travel gurus, it was a trip like no other; full of laughter, life-changing moments, and a whole lot of love!

Victoria Falls is the largest sheet of falling water in the world

Botswana

From lunar-like desert landscapes and open grasslands to riverine forests and papyrus-lined canals, Botswana delivers the very best in land and water safari experiences.

There are some seriously stunning spots to explore – like the Chobe National Park and the Makgadikgadi Pans – but nothing quite beats the fame (and fabulousness) of the Okavango Delta. It was an absolute no-brainer for the Bryce squad of eight to set up camp there.

Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp

“The guides were all fantastic, food was superb, and accommodation was great.” – Leslie Bryce.

The fam’s first hideaway haven was none other than Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp – known for its elegant tented suites and sweeping vistas of the surrounding Okavango Delta.

Packed with prime wildlife and bird-watching hotspots, Nxabega had all the makings of a close-up African safari encounter. And with plenty of privacy, the lovebirds, Jen and Scott, could easily cosy up and connect as a couple.

Little Machaba Camp

The family’s second sanctuary of solitude was that of Little Machaba Camp. This gem, nestled in the nooks of the Okavango Delta’s northeastern realm, is beyond compare – serving major retro vibes with its top-of-the-line living quarters that take you back to the 1950s safari era.

But the best part about this spot? You don’t even have to step outside your tent to catch sight of majestic creatures prowling the vast floodplains. Talk about spellbinding! And it’s perfect for intimate celebrations, too. So perfect that Scott got down on one knee and popped the question to Jen in this dreamy, fairytale setting.

She Said Yes!

“We’d certainly use Rhino Africa again on future trips to Africa – our daughter got engaged on this trip, so maybe a wedding sometime soon!” – Leslie Bryce.

We are over the moon that Jen said yes to Scott’s proposal in such an enchanting setting. We wish you all the happiness in the world and hope you’ll return to Africa one day to celebrate where your love story began – we promise to make it just as special as Brycewana 2016!

Marg and Dick’s Golden Wedding Anniversary in Africa

Experiences,Traveller's tales

You should savour each year of matrimony, but a select few celebrations are just more meaningful. We’re talking about milestone anniversaries like the fifth or whopping 50th! From wares of paper and wood to presents of pearls and gold – traditionally, symbolic gifts are shared to commemorate these success stories of commitment. But for some milestone couples, it’s all about creating unique and lasting memories that stand the test of time. Enter Marg and Dick, the dynamic duo ringing in a whopping 50 years of wondrous wedlock! This golden couple wanted a wild adventure and chose Africa as the backdrop for creating epic memories to celebrate half a century of love. Here’s their African love story – in Marg’s own words…

Lions in the wilderness of Africa - wedding anniversary in Africa

Africa is the perfect place to celebrate wedding anniversaries

Marg & Dick’s Love Affair with Africa

“Our love affair with Africa first began in 2013 when we made our first visit to this amazing continent. It captured our hearts and motivated us to complete several more wonderful safari journeys. So, what an inspirational and exciting way to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary by going on safari again! Our travel consultant, Desiré, compiled our itinerary based on input from us about what we would like to experience. Our “anniversary itinerary” proved absolutely outstanding in every respect from start to finish! So many special memories were created again for us; fantastic wildlife viewings, superb accommodation at every location, food and beverages of the highest standard, together with lots of special surprises awaited us at every camp to acknowledge and celebrate our special milestone.”

andBeyond Tengile River Lodge

“At Tengile River Lodge in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, the bar provided a gathering space at the conclusion of afternoon game drives, and the “mixologists” added a touch of fun behind the bar as they performed their magic to create cocktails with great flair!”

The lodge’s guest area offers a mixed selection of open, interactive and private places, Image Credit: andBeyond

“The other special memory from Tengile was the quaint boutique safari shop. As my travel bag had been left behind at Sydney airport, what had I to wear?! Emergency clothes were purchased at Woolworths at Johannesburg airport. But the safari shop at Tengile saved the day, and I could refurbish my wardrobe! Bubbles and fruit were awaiting us in our villa upon arrival with a card offering good wishes for our anniversary milestone.”

Tengile’s signature shop features a wide range of items sourced from local artisans, Image Credit: andBeyond

Londolozi Tree Camp

Londolozi Tree Camp did not disappoint. Most special memory is that we were allocated the Head Ranger as our guide. To be partnered with Shaun was a privilege.

We would rate Shaun unquestionably as the most accomplished ranger we have ever had the pleasure of experiencing (and we have participated in many game drives during our several visits to Africa)!”

Matetsi River Lodge

“Matetsi River Lodge in Zimbabwe was a special place. A “comical memory” for us on our transfer to Zimbabwe was a local porter claimed my hubby was Indiana Jones, and nothing would convince him otherwise. Too funny!

The warmth and friendliness of all staff at this lodge were outstanding. We are presented with bubbles and a chocolate platter one afternoon for our anniversary and an accompanying gift wrapped in GOLD paper with a happy anniversary greeting. What a wonderful gesture!

The specially prepared cake (baked to suit all my dietary needs) was offered to us on our final night. This gesture brought me to tears.”

Duba Plains Camp

“In our opinion, the best was reserved till last! What an exquisite and luxurious set-up. Our experience at Duba Plains Camp is etched in our memory forever! Luxury and simplicity combined!

Here we were made to feel special in SO MANY WAYS! We were treated to dinner with paired wines in the wine cellar, just the two of us, with silver service!”

“The night prior to our departure, a magnificent surprise awaited us on return from game drive. Bubble bath, bubbles, candles, etc… all for a romantic setting in our bathroom! After that, the dinner table was set, and dinner was served in an intimate environment. We were waited on by the Camp Manager, a privilege afforded to only a few guests, we understand. SO MANY SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY MEMORIES TO TAKE HOME FROM DUBA PLAINS.”

As darkness falls, lovebirds are invited to relish some of the exquisite wines kept in the on-site cellar or simply sit back and experience African cuisine that is on another level of excellence.

The Rise of the ‘Buddymoon’ | African Honeymoons

Honeymoon,South Africa
0 comments

Here at Rhino Africa we’ve seen the rise of a new kind of honeymoon…the ‘buddymoon’. Everyone knows that while weddings are wonderful for celebrating with the people that you love all together, it’s not the best way to spend quality time with friends and family. The buddymoon solves this problem by inviting your nearest and dearest to join you on your travels post-wedding.

Two of our clients, Laura and Jess, embarked on this new adventure with a safari through the Eastern Cape at Inzolo Exclusive Game Lodge, coming back with a wonderful story to share with us and now you.

The Wedding

South African and Northern Irish-born respectively, Jess and Laura made their way back to the Mother City of Cape Town (all the way from Australia) for the wedding of a lifetime. It was a grand affair with over 100 guests travelling in to South Africa from all over the world.

The two said their vows in the heavenly Franschhoek Wine Valley, complete with fynbos floral arrangements and spectacularly sunny weather. The venue, Vrede en Lust, catered to everything including the reception which was only improved by the estate’s award-winning wine.

It took a little planning and convincing for others to tag along on their unusual honeymoon plans but having flown all that way, they decided to make the most of their time in Africa and set off to the Garden Route for a whirlwind buddymoon.

The Garden Route

The Garden Route is a marvellous winding passage through the Eastern Cape that highlights forests, rivers and blue-flag beaches alike. Before a (malaria-free) safari adventure, this is a breathtaking drive from Cape Town where one can stop along the way at many fascinating natural wonders which include whale watching, bungee-jumping and nature walks through the forest.

Jess and Laura made sure to take in some scenery before they ventured down to the jewel of the Eastern Cape – its luxury safari lodges. However, it’s possible to skip the Garden Route altogether and take a short flight between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth after which you’ll only need to drive the last hour to reach the lodge.

Inzolo Exclusive Game Lodge

For our groom Jess, the trip really felt like a homecoming; being fully immersed in the abundant African landscapes that he had left behind around 15 years earlier. However, this escape from suburbia brought everyone together in their love of Africa, despite their differing experiences and origins. This is the magic that comes with an authentic African safari experience.

The lodge only has four private chalets, making Inzolo ideal for honeymoons but this also meant that friends could join the newlyweds on the buddymoon without making the group feel separated. On top of the usual fare, our honeymooners were treated to romantic turn-downs, dinners under the stars and even some champagne surprises.

Something special arises when you share a safari experience together that is difficult to encapsulate but for this couple it came down to the fact that Africa is all about connection.

During their first sightings, the group felt a wave of emotion as they glimpsed a herd of elephants making their way to the vehicle. With three to four unplugged hours of quality time together, game drives proved a serene way of catching up with old friends and making future plans!

There was also the addition of drink stops along the way, riveting wildlife scenes and delicious meals which were only a few of the things that made this safari such a visceral journey. Plus, the lodge provided breathtaking views over the mountainous valleys, making the journey feel outside of time itself, forever held within the bubble of sanctuary that Inzolo Lodge provided.

These are the kinds of experiences that are treasured forever and here at Rhino Africa we love to give our guests memories that last a lifetime.

So if you’re looking for an original way to spend your honeymoon, why not go on a buddymoon? There’s no better way to fall in love all over again with your partner than a journey through Africa. Rhino Africa’s tailor-made safaris are an excellent way to get the most out of every experience – with all of those you hold dear. Book with one of our travel experts today and start planning your dream trip.

The Best Spots for Stargazing in South Africa

South Africa,Top Lists
2 comments

Living in an ever-developing world, it’s not always easy to appreciate the sheer beauty of the night sky when mixed with sky-high buildings and varying levels of pollution. Africa is one of the best destinations to view the magnificent carpet of constellations adorning the sky. In light of this, we’ve put together a list of some of the best spots for stargazing.

1. Sutherland

Not only is Sutherland home to the largest single optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere but it’s also known to be one of the best spots worldwide. Located in the Karoo, just 370 kilometers out of Cape Town, this is the perfect spot to visit if you’re staying in the Mother City

2. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

One of the darkest and least polluted areas in southern Africa, this magical spot is a true treat for stargazers. It is in fact so dark that when looking at the Sky Quality Meter scale of darkness, it registers at 21.9 with the highest possible score being 22. At the parks !Xaus Lodge, the closest source of artificial light is around 50 kilometres away. With such divine darkness and lack of pollution, this is a rare and special spot to visit.

3. Golden Gate Highlands National Park, Free State

This expansive park is famous for its incredible “golden aura” stemming from the area’s various shades of sandstone and the way sunlight reflects off it. Its vastly unspoiled landscapes make it an ideal spot for stargazing due to the lack of light pollution. For the ultimate experience, hike up Ribokkop – the highest point in the park – and spend the night in the wilderness.

4. Madikwe Game Reserve, North West Province

Due to the limited number of people allowed in the reserve at one time, it is the perfect spot for some serene stargazing. Easily spotted star formations include the Southern Cross, the Jewel Box cluster or the enchanting Milky Way. If you’re hoping to experience some of the area’s magic, you’ll have to stay in one of the 20 lodges available as no day visitors are allowed. For anyone who would appreciate the benefit of a closer look, we recommend Etali Safari Lodge or Royal Madikwe who allow guests access to their telescope.

5. Kruger National Park

South Africa’s most iconic game-viewing destination and the second-largest park in all of Africa, this wildlife-dense park is ideal for some star-studded skies. Filled with a diverse array of incredible accommodation options, this exceptional park is suited to a vast variety of visitors. For the best of both worlds, head out on an unforgettable night drive to experience nature’s nocturnal animals and the unpolluted expanse of African skies.

6. The Cederberg, Western Cape

Around 240 kilometres from Cape Town lie the Cederberg Mountains. Located high within this undulating landscape is the Cederberg Astronomical Conservancy – an ideal spot for seeing stars such as The Southern Cross, Herschel’s Jewel Box, and Omega Centauri. Every Saturday (weather permitting) the Conservancy opens its doors to visitors who can enjoy sights of the skies and lectures if arranged in advance.

Plan your trip on the lunar cycles as when the moon is full, the Conservancy is closed – no stars can be seen past the brightness of the moon at this time!

Naming just a few of our favourites, South Africa is full of secluded spots that are ideal to see star-studded skies.

Ah… L’amour! Valentine’s Day Ideas.

Cape Town,Honeymoon
0 comments

It is my experience that no matter what your persuasion, everyone sees red on Valentines Day… The health groups protest the chocolate, the cynical proclaim the whole day a farce and the lonely… well, let’s just say I have already bought myself roses.

Nevertheless, the eternal optimist in me is secretly very into this most controversial of ‘holidays’, against all odds I’m just a big pile of love today. And while my closest relationship is with my Blackberry, I actually do know a thing or two about the great V-Day woo. (I even rhyme… for you!)

If you are looking for inspiration, allow me to break down the options for you…

For the ‘Great Date’ you have three basic categories into which you can delve for some magic: ‘Broaden Your Horizons’, ‘The Adventure Date’ and ‘Fun and Fabulous’.  This enables you to pick the appropriate activity to suite your romantic needs as not everyone is into romantic dinners or roses.

‘Broaden Your Horizons’ is for the thinking couple, it is about trying something new that will stimulate you mentally. This is where you go to an art gallery or museum, visit historic places or botanical gardens. You discuss, you postulate, you share opinions while at the same time enjoying the cultural heritage of your city. Try the National Gallery at the Company Gardens or the Planetarium and if you are the outdoors type Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is sure to impress.

The ‘Adventure Date’ is for the adrenaline hungry couple, get worked up together, sweat and exert yourself. This is all about putting your love to the test. For this you can mountain bike to the top of a hill at sunset, enjoy a sunset surf or even do karaoke together. Do something when where you get a chance to fluff your feathers and be there to support your partner, this is the stuff of lifetime bondage and love.

‘Fun and Fabulous’ is your standard dinner or drink together. But with a city as beautiful, and well fed, as Cape Town you have the chance to make it spectacular. Dress to the nines and step out for an evening of roof top cocktails at Sky Bar in the Cape Quarter or on a cruise around Clifton. The Grand Café and Beach is a wonderful setting where you can enjoy the best of the mountain and the sea with a sensual soundtrack to match. Be dashing, add some sparkle and make the evening cinematic so that for years to come the movie in your head of this day is a Romantic Classic!

And while the ‘ick’ factor can undoubtedly creep into even the most sincere of romantic moments, I advise that you soldier on dear Warrior of Love. My thinking has always been, if you love someone enough you will make the effort… no matter what!

And if tonight goes as planned and you are still together in the morning, May I recommend our Honeymoon section. We can help you to start planning the getaway of your dreams and whether you want to broaden your horizons or fill your life with adventure, romantic Africa is tailor-made with Rhino Africa.
