Over the past 20 years, we’ve had a wild and wondrous journey of growth and self-discovery! Our two-decade adventure has been a heart-stirring blend with Africa’s spirit. Your stories intertwine with ours, making this celebration all the more special. As we embrace this milestone, let’s revel in how African travels have the power to fuel passions and shape futures.

Pause and Ponder

Take time for yourself. In the hustle of everyday life, the moments of solitude and reflection are scarce. We’ve seen first-hand how Africa’s landscapes offer the perfect backdrop for this introspection.

From the serene savannahs of the Serengeti and Maasai Mara to the rhythmic waves lapping powdery-white sands of the Indian Ocean Islands, Africa is a sanctuary where time seems to stand still, allowing you to press pause and enjoy the moment.

Choose Your Tempo

Take time to do everything. And to do nothing. Africa, in its boundless diversity, offers endless possibilities. Whether you’re seeking a Big 5 safari or a peaceful retreat in a secluded lodge, our continent entertains every desire.

It’s a place where you can chase the sunrise on a morning safari in the Greater Kruger National Park, enjoy a helicopter flight above the mighty Victoria Falls, or even spend the afternoon sipping sundowners in the quiet company of Madagascar’s lemurs beneath ancient baobab trees. The choice to engage or to unwind is entirely yours.

Off the Grid, Into the Wild

Take time to switch off. In our digitally-dominated world, disconnecting is a luxury. Inhale the fresh, unpolluted air, listen to the wildlife symphony, and savour evenings where the only luminescence is from the moon and stars.

Venture Boldly

Take time to challenge yourself, to try something new. Africa inspires bravery and curiosity. It’s a land where you can conquer fears and embrace new experiences.

Picture yourself summiting Mount Kilimanjaro, navigating the watery tendrils of the Okavango Delta, dominating the churning rapids of the Zambezi River, or learning the ancient tracking skills from a Maasai warrior. Each exciting endeavour not only challenges the body but also broadens the mind.

Cultural Crossroads

Take time to gain perspective, to be selfless. Travelling through Africa, you’ll encounter diverse cultures and communities. These interactions offer profound lessons in empathy. Understanding their lives, their victories, and their struggles, you gain a newfound appreciation for the human experience.

Engaging with Africa’s people often inspires a deep-seated desire to contribute positively and make a meaningful difference in the world. It’s life-changing – quite literally!

Life’s Grand Scale

Take time to reflect, to broaden your horizons. The African landscape, with its timeless beauty and indescribable vastness is a mirror reflecting your deepest thoughts and aspirations. It’s where horizons are not just geographical but also personal, expanding your understanding of the world and your place within it.

DUM DUM, doo doo DUM DUM! Attention all “Mission: Impossible” moviegoers and Tom Cruise sweethearts! The Hollywood heartthrob has been spotted in stunning South Africa, and let’s just say things are about to get a little more exciting around these neck of the woods…

The Countdown Is Not Helping

Yes, you heard that right – Tom Cruise is in South Africa, and he’s not just here to soak up the sun, go on a Big 5 safari, and enjoy a few braais (that’s barbecues for the non-South Africans out there). No, Cruise is in town to film the latest instalment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, and let’s just say the stakes are high (as per usual).

Red light! Green light!

But don’t just take our word for it – locals have been spotting Cruise all over the place. According to social media, (in true “spy” fashion) Cruise landed his helicopter at the Killarney Country Club in Johannesburg earlier this month. Then, Twitter user @Blademale, also shared a photo and short video of Tom Cruise driving through KwaZulu-Natal, which they captured while he passed by – an unexpected road trip surprise for sure!

Make It Count

As filming gets underway, fans can expect to see more of Cruise in South Africa as he takes on the role of Ethan Hunt, the main character in the “Mission: Impossible” series. Whether he’s scaling the towering heights of Table Mountain or navigating the bustling streets of Cape Town, Cruise is sure to make the most of his time in our beautiful country as he brings the latest instalment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise to life.

If I Let You Know Where I’m Going, I Won’t Be On Holiday

So why South Africa, you ask? Well, we can’t give away too many details (those pesky non-disclosure agreements), but let’s just say the diverse landscapes and stunning natural beauty of our beloved country provide the perfect backdrop for some high-stakes action sequences.

As a luxury African safari company passionate about sustainability and conservation, we at Rhino Africa are always on the lookout for like-minded organisations to partner with. We’re all about making positive change in Africa, and in 2023, we’re excited to be working with some truly inspirational “earth angels”. Learn more about our Impact Partners.

Good Work Foundation

First up, we’ve got the Good Work Foundation. These guys are all about education, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship in rural areas of South Africa. We believe that providing support and education to communities is crucial for empowering future generations to become conservationists, innovators, and leaders.

Despite the challenges the pandemic brought over these past couple of years, the Good Work Foundation has thrived in leaps and bounds – opening a sixth Mpumalanga-based Digital Learning Campus and enrolling 50,234 students in their Open Learning Academy to date. It’s been a total game-changer for these kids and their families!

Wildlife Act

Back in 2012, we joined forces with Wildlife Act to support their team of passionate conservationists in their mission to protect endangered and threatened species and bring them back from the brink of extinction. We strive to expand their conservation efforts and provide critical support to the rangers on the front lines of protecting wildlife.

Together with our Impact Partner, we’re committed to safeguarding the future of our planet’s wildlife and ensuring that future generations can enjoy the beauty and diversity of these incredible creatures. Over the past two years, they’ve achieved a myriad of milestones, including saving and tracking hundreds of animals as well as educating 124 new Conservation Ambassadors.

Khumbulani Day Care Centre

Khumbulani Day Care Centre is an inspiring initiative that Rhino Africa is proud to be a part of. As a haven for 300 HIV Aids-infected and -affected children, Khumbulani was born out of a passion for providing a safe and supportive environment for these young lives. Its inconspicuous beginnings in 2000 in the two-bedroom home of Gloria Bebeza are a testament to the power of determination and the desire to make a difference in the world.

Through their partnership with Rhino Africa and a broad network of funders, their facility has grown immensely with four permanent staff members, 15 volunteers and approximately 300 beneficiaries. Khumbulani is truly inspirational – providing access to education, healthcare, and other essential services to rural communities in need.

Rhinos Saving Rhinos

Last but definitely not least, in our pursuit of protecting Africa’s wildlife, two other initiatives near and dear to our hearts are Challenge4ACause and Save the Rhino Trust

Challenge4ACause is our annual cycling event, where we cycle some of the most remote and unruly routes in the wildest corners of Africa – all the while raising funds to support the conservation of Africa’s endangered species and the upliftment of impoverished communities.

We also support Save the Rhino Trust in protecting the highly endangered desert-adapted black rhino population. This partnership allows us to work together to ensure the survival of these rhinos in Namibia‘s Damaraland region and positively impact the future of these magnificent mammals.

Travel Goals for 2023: Rhino Africa CEO David Ryan’s Bucket List

If you haven’t started thinking about your travel goals for 2023, there’s no better time than now. Christmas is around the corner, and for some, that means booking a flight home for the holidays. However, for me, it means planning our 2023 Travel Calendar can begin! After 20-plus years in the luxury safari business, I can safely say I cannot resist the lure of an African safari. And when it comes to African Travel, I always try to combine some wild encounters with luxury experiences. And in 2023, I have some audacious travel goals. This year, I decided to share them with you. Here they are…

Spectacular sundowners at Shumba Camp

Make your Travel Goals for 2023 come true, Image Credit: Shumba Camp

1. Shumba Camp in Zambia’s Busanga Plains

Let’s start with Shumba Camp in Zambia‘s Kafue National Park. This stunning lodge offers guests some serious bragging rights and is the perfect blend of comfort and adventure.

When you’re not taking a dip in the pool, sipping on your favourite cocktail at the bar, or enjoying the majestic Kafue River, you can enjoy the incredible diversity of wildlife this area offers. From giraffes to elephants, buffalo, and the rare African wild dog, Kafue is one of Africa’s most scenic national parks.

The newly renovated Shumba Camp is the epitome of Zambian hospitality. With its cosy atmosphere and stunning scenery, as a family of six, what I love about Shumba is that it’s both the perfect destination for a romantic getaway or a family vacation. So, exploring the wonders of Zambia and the Busanga Plains ranks very high on my 2023 African Travel list.

2. Lango Camp in Congo’s Odzala-Kokoua National Park

Next up, we have the Congo’s Odzala-Kokoua National Park and Lango Camp. This is a safari experience like no other. From gorilla trekking to bird watching, you’ll experience the national park’s vibrant wildlife.

Odzala is a true paradise, with its lush forests, exotic wildlife, and breathtaking views. Located in the Kafue River Basin, the national park is known for its biodiversity and rich forest wildlife. Add over 400 species of birds, and it’s not hard to see why Odzala is a birdwatcher’s paradise.

Lango Camp offers great accommodations in the heart of the national park. You can choose between a luxurious tent or enjoying a traditional African safari-style experience with a bush camp. Still, either way, the highlight of your stay at Lango Camp will be its stunning views. Whether you’re taking in the beauty of the forest or the animals on the savannah, you’ll be mesmerised by the beauty of nature in the Congo.

3. Serra Cafema Camp in the Hartmann Valley, Namibia

Nestled in the Hartmann Valley at the most remote corner of Namibia, Serra Cafema Camp is the perfect getaway for those looking for a little peace and quiet. With only eight tents, each with its own private deck and breathtaking views of the Kunene River and valley, you’ll feel like you’re the only one around.

What I love about Serra Cafema Camp is that you can truly just kick back and relax. Wake up in the morning and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before setting out on an adventure to explore the surrounding area. With its ancient rock formations, dunes, and rare wildlife, there’s plenty to explore.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you can take a scenic boat trip down the Kunene River and look for Colgate, the resident “crocodile”. And, if you’re really lucky, you might even get to meet the Himbas, the last truly nomadic tribe left on earth, and learn more about their culture and traditions.

4. Singita Sasakwa Lodge in the Private Grumeti Reserve in Northern Tanzania

Singita Sasakwa Lodge...what can I say? It’s practically paradise! Located in the stunningly beautiful Private Grumeti Reserve in Northern Tanzania, this luxurious lodge will surely be a highlight on your African safari.

As soon as you arrive, you’ll be taken aback by the sheer beauty of this place. With its contemporary design, it blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Everywhere you look, you’ll find breathtaking views of the Grumeti, with its rolling hills and wide open plains.

The lodge itself is just as impressive as the views! In true Singita style, the suites are spacious and comfortable, with exquisite furniture and décor. The library, spa, and infinity pool are perfect for relaxing between safaris. From game drives to hot air ballooning, Singita Grumeti is the perfect spot for a life-changing safari.

5. &Beyond Crater Lodge, Ngorongoro Crater

Last but not least, if you’re looking for a truly unique place to stay filled with adventure and natural beauty, then Crater Lodge in Ngorongoro Crater is the place for you! This ultra-luxurious lodge is located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and situated on the crater edge with awe-inspiring views.

One of the world’s most famous natural sites, the crater, looks like a vast bowl overflowing with lush vegetation and wildlife. You can even take a walk around the crater’s rim and look down at the amazing sights.

So, if you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind adventure filled with natural beauty, then Crater Lodge in Ngorongoro Crater is a perfect choice! With its luxurious accommodations, unique activities, and stunning views, this is the perfect place to stay for those who want to experience the crater’s beauty up close.

2023, you’ll be arriving in just a few short weeks, so I thought it important for us to understand where things are before you descend upon us. Your predecessors haven’t been too kind – from wildfires to toilet paper shortages and chaotic streets to weather events, 2020 and 2021 have certainly taken their toll! On the other hand, 2022 has provided some much-needed light at the end of a very dark tunnel. And we’re relying on you, 2023, to continue that shine.

Ready for 2023: Man and woman looking at view from Silvan's pool

We’re ready for 2023

Reviving Tourism

There’s no denying that the pandemic decimated our beloved tourism industry, but 2022 has certainly lifted the bar and once again set us free. Guests are gleefully reaching for their passports and heading back to Africa as Covid-19 travel restrictions dissipate and flight frequencies continue to improve.

Across our industry, post-pandemic occupancies are once again being reached and breached, as travel profoundly impacts Africa’s recovery. And, in turn, Africa profoundly impacts the lives of its guests.

Looking Back on 2022

As we reflect on 2022, I’m reminded of educator and philosopher Paulo Freire’s quote, “Reflection and action must never be undertaken independently.”

So, as we fast approach the end of 2022, there’s much reflection being conducted within our Rhino Africa team, alongside some exciting planning and action in the form of continued developments in our guest experience, as our plans for 2023 get underway.

CSR will remain important for us in 2023: Founder and CEO David Ryan at The Good Work Foundation 10th anniversary

2022 has been important for our Impact Partners

Rhinos Charging Ahead

2022 has undoubtedly been an exciting year of recovery for Rhino Africa, albeit a challenging one at times. Despite this, we have remained diligent, focused and continue reaffirming ourselves as the World’s Best Safari Company. Our singular high touch, bespoke focus to ensure that we have our clients’ best interests at heart in everything we do, has, as we anticipated, been the primary driver of our 2022 recovery.

As we predicted a rapid increase in the commencement of travel in the latter half of 2022, in the first half of the year, we enthusiastically focused on rebuilding the capacity and skills of our Rhino Crash. To ensure that our clients’ and our teams’ best interests remain at the heart of everything we do, we also returned Rhino Africa to 100% private ownership during the first half of 2022.

Rhino Crash in Italy

We attended the IGLTA conference in Italy

To Infinity and Beyond

With 120 passionate Rhinos now leading this recovery, the increased talent density is apparent to all, as we closed out our third quarter, on 30 Nov 22, at 95% of our pre-Covid revenue. But our greatest pleasure is to share our passion for Africa with our guests once again, particularly those returning, of which there were many.

As a web-based company, we’re conscious that we’re only as good as the passion and knowledge of our people, products and the destinations with whom we partner. This is “collaboration” in its finest form and has been a joy to witness.

My greatest thrill is waking up daily and reading the countless threads of guests’ feedback and the profound impact Africa has had on their lives. It’s indeed a great privilege for us to be able to play a role in that journey.

Luxury is in The Detail

A term we often use at Rhino Africa is “Luxury is in the detail”. This phrase underpins our understanding that there is much more to African Travel than simply building and quoting an itinerary. We know, understand and care about the challenges and pleasures that come with a bespoke tailor-made trip to Africa.

Hence, in the second half of 2022, our attention again returned to increasing the vast reservoir of expert destination and product knowledge of our African Travel Experts. In addition, we’ve innovated to improve the booking experience with Rhino Africa and ensure our guests’ holiday investments remain secure.

We can't wait for the travel year 2023

We can’t wait for the travel year 2023

We’re Ready for You, 2023

And so, we’ll be heading into your year, 2023. A year, as we’d like to term it, “of clear vision”. We look forward to welcoming over 12,000 foreign guests to Africa and will continue to deliver on our promises to our guests.

We know that our guests have choices, but we like to think that Rhino Africa is not just any travel company! With 18 years of experience under our belt and founded on family values, the purposeful commitment to uplifting communities and protecting Africa’s wildlife truly remains at the heart of what we do.

I wish everyone a very enjoyable festive season, whether it be with family and friends or otherwise.

Roll on 2023 – we’re ready for you!

Mandela Day 2022

Doing Good
2 comments

At Rhino Africa, we love showing off our continent. Simply put, it’s what we do. But there’s more to it than meets the eye. Our “why” has always been about uplifting Africa’s communities and protecting its wildlife and wild spaces. And we strive to do this in the most sustainable way possible. With this in mind and due to our proudly South African heritage, Mandela Day is a very special day for us. So, here’s what we got up to this year.

What is Mandela Day?

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (affectionately known by South Africans as Madiba) was a social rights activist, politician and philanthropist who became South Africa’s first democratically elected president. He dedicated a large portion of his life to the fight against the rule of the apartheid government and spent a total of 27 years in prison. Following his release and subsequent election as president, Mandela became a worldwide icon for reconciliation.

In 2010, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared the 18th of July, the late President Nelson Mandela’s birthday, as Nelson Mandela International Day. As a result, this annual event commemorates his commitment to human rights, conflict resolution and reconciliation and his pivotal role in supporting Africa’s independence and unification.

Mandela Day encourages people worldwide to pay tribute to the legacy of arguably one of the greatest humans in history. Therefore, every year, millions of people do so by serving those in need and contributing to communities. Participants offer 67 minutes of their time on Mandela Day as a symbolic gesture recognising the 67 years that Nelson Mandela spent fighting for justice, equality and human rights for all.

Why is Mandela Day important?

A delighted child with David

Rhino Africa founder and CEO, David Ryan, spending time with the children of Khumbulani

A global movement for positive change begins with small actions. Therefore, Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the belief that everyone has the potential to make a difference. Furthermore, it proves that even these small actions can help raise awareness. Doing so also broadens the reach of Mandela’s values of opposing injustice, assisting those in need, and practising reconciliation.

Recognising and reaching out to those in need is fundamental to building a sustainable society that offers opportunities for all. Therefore, what may seem like a small donation or contribution today could actually be a part of a life-changing intervention for a group of school children, thereby propelling them to a more hopeful future.

How the Rhinos got involved in Mandela Day

Getting creative  is great,  but when it ends with a tasty treat it’s even better

Rhino Africa believes that empowering future generations of conservationists, innovators, and leaders begins with community upliftment and education. As a result, Rhino Africa has a long history of collaboration with the Khumbulani Health, Education and Resource Centre.

On Mandela Day this year, a team of our Rhinos visited the Khumbulani Centre to spread the love of this joyous day. We were warmly welcomed to the facility by Mama Gloria and her amazing team before being shown around.

Striking a pose while getting your face painted is no easy task

The delighted faces of the little ones lit up as we entered the classrooms, each group performing a song for us in greeting! Our Rhino helpers went from class to class with face paints and fun activities to entertain the children while the cupcake decorating station and jumping castle were being set up.

Hands up if you’re ready for cupcakes!

Each child could decorate as many cupcakes as they wanted to with different coloured frosting, sprinkles and glitter. And, of course, what would a Mandela Day cupcake be without a rainbow-coloured Mandela fondant disc for each one!

A bite to eat, and the children were off, squeals of delight ringing through the air as their little feet bounced on the jumping castle. Tummies full and hearts happy, it was time for the Rhinos to say goodbye. But not forever, as we’ll be back in the very near future.

What is Khumbulani?

Khumbulani rises out of Khayelitsha like a beacon of hope for the community

Established by a group of nine women in the early 2000s, Khumbulani recognised the community of Khayelitsha, near Cape Town, crying out for help. Widespread poverty and the lasting effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic left children in dire need of support. Starting as a vegetable garden and soup kitchen operating from Gloria Bebeza’s modest home, it rapidly transformed into a beacon of hope for the community.

Today, this registered non-profit organisation serves as a haven for 300 HIV-infected and impacted children. Offering integrated services for early childhood development, youth development and food security, they have made a tangible difference in the lives of thousands of children to date. As one of Rhino Africa’s Impact Partners, every guest travelling with us to Africa helps enrich and support these children.

The children of Khumbulani waving hello!

Khumbulani offers formative, transformative, and life-changing interventions with long-lasting effects. By playing an active role in early childhood development, youth development, HIV/AIDS wellness, and food security, they aim to provide a foundation for children to thrive. In the long term, actions like these empower the community to restore dignity, self-pride and self-reliance.

Spotlight on our Rhinos: SEO

Special Features
1 comment

Introducing the new Spotlight on Our Rhinos blog segment! We want to give readers a chance to see what goes on behind the scenes, to peek through the grassland, and to see what’s under the safari vehicle hood. Rhino Africa is an ecosystem all its own with different habitats and different functions in each. This time, we’re taking a closer look at our Digital Marketing department, and more specifically, SEO. We caught up with our German SEO Intern, Julia, to see what she had to say.

Julia grew up in the south of Austria and spent much of her childhood climbing up mountains and skiing down them. Her desire to discover distant places and cultures has seen her work and study in six different countries in the past three years alone (although, we’re smug to say South Africa is the only country she has returned to so far). Julia is currently doing her Masters at Montpellier Business School in France and is shamelessly passionate about tech and the online world. She worked for the likes of Apple, Amazon, and Google before joining Rhino Africa to learn more about the world of SEO.

Q: How did you find out about Rhino Africa?

A: I found out about the company through YouTube when I saw an internship video you guys did. I thought, yeah, this must be a cool place to work, so I just applied.

Q: What made you interested in Digital Marketing and SEO?

A: Well, I’ve had some touch points with Digital Marketing already thanks to my studies in the past and my previous work experience. I think it’s an exciting field to work in because the world is moving online and people basically don’t only go online anymore – they live online. It’s a great opportunity for brands, especially with the shift to mobile, and I thought it was a pretty cool challenge that I wanted to face. There are a lot of opportunities to catch intent-driven moments and it’s such an uncertain field in that it is so dynamic and constantly evolving, and that’s what made me want to focus on it in my career.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about SEO?

A: I suppose firstly it’s the collaboration that happens across different teams. You have touch points with different teams all the time, whether it’s with the content writers, the tech team, PR, or social media. Everything you do in SEO has an impact on other aspects of the company whether it’s for site improvements with the techies or backlink strategies with another department. I’m always seeing different faces and doing different things. I also like it because I’m quite an analytical person and SEO comes down to a lot of analysis. You have to study your customers and learn about them. All your actions are basically driven by what the customer wants, what they’re thinking, what they want to see, and what they’re looking for online. I remember in my first week here I did an audit on the German website and those are the sorts of things I really enjoy. Your customers are always changing, too, and because of that SEO involves a never-ending process of optimisation: making sure your website is doing well and making sure your keywords are relevant and you’re not losing ground on competitors.

Q: How important do you think SEO is for a company?

A: I guess it’s an important tool for companies to improve their traffic and to generate more qualified customer leads, more so than what other marketing tools might give them. But, of course,  it is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to achieving marketing objectives for your brand. I see SEO as a fundamental bedrock to a company’s online presence. If your domain is strong, it helps your other marketing initiatives as well.

Q: Do you think you will want to work in SEO after your internship?

A: Well, as I said before, I’d had lots of touch points with Digital Marketing before I started at Rhino Africa and SEO was an area that I hadn’t worked in before. I knew that before I came I wanted to work in and focus on Search Engine Marketing (PPC) and Online Video and I thought it would be a good career choice and beneficial to my own personal growth. But, you never know, if there’s a good opportunity, of course, I’d also do SEO.

Q: What do you enjoy most about Rhino Africa’s Digital Marketing team?

A: The people. Yeah, it’s just a fun place to work at and I like waking up and being excited about going to work every day to see everybody.

Q: Can you tell us something new/fun that you learnt while working at Rhino Africa?

A: I guess something new for me was working in a company with such cultural diversity. I mean, I’ve travelled a lot and I’ve studied abroad, but at Rhino you don’t feel the cultural differences. Everyone comes from a different corner of the world but we all have a central goal. It’s really easy to work with everyone.

Q: What has been your most memorable experience at Rhino Africa so far?

A: My best day was when I accompanied the multimedia team to Simon’s Town. We went to Boulder’s Beach to get footage of the penguin colony.

Q: And lastly, our standard interview question, what is your favourite African animal?

A: Elephants. They seem so calm but they’re actually really strong and powerful. And they’re very intelligent.

You can find out more about our Internship programmes here.

“We have not inherited this land from our ancestors; rather we have borrowed it from our children.” – African Proverb

Rain is a sign of good luck, especially in Africa. It fertilises the soil, waters plants, satiates wildlife, sustains communities, and it promises prosperity. On the morning that the Khumbulani Health and Education Resource Centre was poised to open, the heavens opened, too.

Thankfully for our guests, performers, and important attendees, after giving her much-appreciated blessing, Mother Nature cleared the sky just in time for Khumbulani’s official opening ceremony to begin.A learner holds the scissors that will open the new centreThe day will long be remembered by parents, teachers, sponsors, and all those who attended — which is fitting considering ‘remember’ is precisely what Khumbulani means in Xhosa. This was the theme of Western Cape Premier Helen Zille’s inspiring address.Helen Zille and Mama Gloria Bebeza at Khumbulani Centre's official opening ceremony

Guests at Khumbulani Centre's official opening ceremonyFor Premier Zille, remembrance is a two-way street; one that not only looks back to the past but one that extends into the future. She urged those in the audience to not only remember where we came from and the important lessons that we have learnt along the way, but to also remember our children and the legacy we are leaving behind for them long after we have departed.Helen Zille and Mama Gloria cut the ribbon at Khumbulani Centre's official opening ceremonyMurmurs of affirmation and resounding agreement came from the audience as Mrs Zille spoke, not only promoting the importance of education, progression, and community unity but also the significance of the African principle of Ubuntu. The spirit of Ubuntu was present at Khumbulani Centre's official opening ceremonyAttendees painted the tent a kaleidoscope of colours with traditional outfits being the order of the day. This warm atmosphere was only compounded by the sounds of a Marimba band whose joyful harmony reverberated throughout the tent during intervals while a chorus of song was sounded out by a community choir.A teacher in splendid traditional dress at Khumbulani's official openingDespite Khumbulani’s inconspicuous beginnings in a family home over a decade ago, the three-story centre and daycare now occupies prime position on a corner block in Khayelitsha and has become a defining figurehead across the horizon of South Africa’s fastest-growing township. It cares for 300 HIV Aids-infected and affected children daily, as well as provides a support system and soup kitchen for the community in the area.Khumbulani Centre

Rhino Africa is immensely proud to be actively involved in a community upliftment and social outreach programme such as this. Globe-trotters who travel with us are contributing to the legacy we are leaving in Africa, but there is more to be done and you can help. A Taster Tour of the Paarl Wine Route

Cape Town,Cape Winelands,South Africa
0 comments

Aptly named after the Afrikaans word for ‘pearl’, the town of Paarl is undoubtedly one of the many jewels of South Africa’s Western Cape. Nestled among acres of seemingly endless winelands, its location along the prolific self-drive tourist route R62, and its convenient proximity to Cape Town makes a stop in this town a necessary addition to any worthwhile itinerary exploring the area.

But that’s not all: the Cape Winelands is a proverbial melting pot of flavour and fun. Numerous wine farms, estates, and all sorts of other points of interest showcase the gastronomic and viticultural talent that the region has become known for. As resident Capetonians ourselves, we’ve become regulars to this gem located just over an hour from our head offices in the Mother City. Allow us to lead you on a Taster Tour through the Paarl Winelands where your taste buds are sure to be left tantalised:

Babylonstoren:

Mountain views and gardens at Bablyonstoren

Located on one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms in the region, Babylonstoren has its roots extending as far back as 1692. Today it’s 3.5-hectare gardens provide its restaurants, Babel (located in a modern and restored cow shed) and the Greenhouse (located in its namesake), with fresh fruit and vegetables for its table. Visitors can also enjoy garden tours and workshops from the estate’s resident green-thumbed horticulturists themselves.

A scenic spot to relax at Babylonstoren, at the Paarl Wine Route

The garden is undoubtedly the theme of this place, whether you’re gazing through the Greenhouse windows to the dappled sunlight outside or languishing in the ‘living spa’ found in a bamboo forest and framed by gently trickling water channels.  And after all of this? Simply amble about and marvel in wonder at the veritable Eden surrounding you.

The Spice Route:

A self-declared ‘sensory journey of discovery for the modern-day explorer’, the Spice Route offers a dizzying array of diversions for all to enjoy, whether you’re a group of friends exploring the area, a couple on a day out, or a family with two excitable kids in tow. A full day is definitely in need to enjoy all that the Spice Route has to offer. It is found in the winelands, so, naturally, wine tasting is most certainly on offer, but why not also sample craft beer at the Wilderer Distillery or enjoy a beer and biltong pairing at the Barley & Biltong Beer Garden?

Artisan chocolate can be bought from the Spice Route’s studio, decadent tapas and pizza can be munched on at La Grapperia, or those in search of a truly South African meal can enjoy lunch at Bertus Basson’s restaurant. There’s even a kids play area, art gallery, and Venetian-style glassblowing factory, as well as a cafe and deli allowing visitors to take a bit of Paarl home with them!

Fairview:

Many may think that the Paarl Wine Route is all about wine—but they would be mistaken! At Fairview Wine & Cheese Estate, cheese is the chosen morsel of the day with its range of over 20 different artisanal cheeses that have become famous nationwide. That being said, Fairview wine is the perfect accompaniment to Fairview cheese – so why not enjoy a carefully chosen pairing while in the Tasting Room? Don’t forget a photo op at the estate’s unique goat tower which has sparked a worldwide trend, with numerous copies popping up all across the globe.

Fairview is not home to one, but two tasting rooms: the Main Tasting Room housing numerous unique pods around which visitors cluster to learn about the wine and cheese, and the slightly more formal (but just as refined) Beryl Back Master Tasting Room. There is also an extensive shop and deli allowing visitors to take all their favourites of the day home with them, as well as the popular Goatshed Restaurant, dishing up only the freshest fare with ingredients for their dishes coming from Fairview itself and surrounding farms.

Val de Vie:

Apart from its award-winning wines, Val de Vie’s manicured estate also boasts polo grounds, a polo club, all-weather arena, tennis academy, and swimming club. Throughout the year, the estate is home to high-profile events attracting the creme-de-la-creme of the South African sporting and social scene. The onsite Health Club even boasts a swimming academy led by a South African gold medallist Olympic swimmer – how’s that for learning from the best?

Val de Vie’s Polo Club Restaurant offer an array of experiences to suit every palate, from its flagship tastings and pairings, to its home-cooked meals, special events, and chef nights that happen throughout the year. Here, visitors can meet new people and get personally acquainted with the Polo Club’s chef.

Rhebokskloof Wine Estate:

Thanks to its unusual location between the lush Paarl valley and the stark granite hills of Paarl Rock’s mountains, a unique microclimate has flourished on the landscape where Rhebokskloof Wine Estate is found. Aside from its world-class wines, Rhebokskloof also produces grape juice and olive oil which can be bought from the estate. For an all-encompassing experience of untold relaxation, this estate is the answer.

Enjoy pairings in its Tasting Room, sumptuous fare at its restaurant, and relaxed picnics on the manicured lawns surrounding its dam. Picnic basket options abound with menus to suit kids and those who favour banting and gluten-free meals. Parents are sure to rejoice with the estate’s trampoline, jungle gym, pony rides, and jumping castle – all guaranteed to keep little tykes entertained while their folks enjoy a well-deserved time out.

Monkeying around with the Khumbulani kids

Cape Town,Doing Good

Volunteers from Rhino Africa looked grimly at the sky last Friday afternoon, wondering if the heavens would open and spoil all the fun they had in store for the kids from Khumbulani. The Rhino crash was en route to Khayelitsha to pick up 120 learners between the ages of 3 and 5 and take them on an adventure to Monkey Town for the day.

Khumbulani kids eager to get going

This educational outing aimed to not only provide fun and laughter for the kids but also to foster a love for nature and a better understanding of the importance of preserving our globe’s wildlife.

Luckily, the rain didn’t dull any of the smiles on the road that day. The children eagerly chanted “Faster, Mr Bus Driver, we are not scared!” on the bus, and marvelled at the feat that they each had their own seat and seatbelt. The air, thick with excitement, could not be dampened by the grey clouds hanging overhead.

A group of children from Khumbulani learn about monkeys

This exuberant group of learners had their voices echo across the park, much to the delight of Tammy the Ape who responded with enthusiastic applause. Shrieks of nervous laughter rang out while kids clamoured forward to catch a glimpse of a snake – which some of the brave even dared to touch.

And then, to the delight of all, lunchtime brought the sunshine – perfect timing for the remainder of the afternoon which was to be spent revelling in Monkey Town’s massive playground.

Big smiles from Khumbulani's kids

Monkey Town aims to have its guests leave with a greater understanding of primates and the unrelenting threats they are facing in the wild today – an important lesson for all who visit this wildlife park. But for the kids from Khumbulani, even more so, as it was their first time seeing monkeys and apes of any kind.  They stared in wonder at mothers carrying their babies and the family units not so different from our own.

The children from Khumbulani all come from HIV Aids-infected and -affected backgrounds and the daycare started back in 2000 in the 2-bedroom home of one Gloria Bebeza. Mama Gloria saw a grave need in her surrounding community for children from these backgrounds to have care, attention, and supervision during the day.

Captivated

Rhino Africa is immensely proud to have had a hand in transforming this one-woman initiative into a full-fledged daycare which runs out of its own 3-story premises in Khayelitsha, caring for approximately 300 learners every day. In collaboration with Nhlayisa, we also sponsor a specially-formulated porridge for the children during their days at Khumbulani in an effort to ensure their little bodies get all the nutrients they desperately need.

This isn’t enough for us, though, and neither is it for the kids. With the introduction of our CSR programme and our CSR specialist, Teresa van der Bank, we want to expose the children of Khumbulani to even more educational outings and experiences that are seemingly incomprehensible because of their poverty-stricken backgrounds. But, we can’t do it all on our own and this is where you come in!

Delighted with her plush toy

By travelling with us at Rhino Africa, you are contributing to our various outreach initiatives – one of them being Khumbulani Day Care Centre – but you could do more. A donation of just $500 would sponsor an outing and have another Khumbulani dream come true! To see what else we’ve done with the Khumbulani kids, check out our trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium and our day spent colouring outside the lines and making the day-care a little brighter!

A memorable day for us and for the Khumbulani kids
