Myths, Miracles and Mysteries: The Okavango River Explained

The Okavango River extends like a hand through the country of Botswana and fans out into multifold veins of little streams. Mysteriously flooding during the dry winter months, the million-dollar question is: “Where is the water coming from?” It’s a fair one, too, as the arid Kalahari plains only receive around 500mm of water per year. Despite the low rainfall, it still remains an oasis in the heart of the desert. We take a closer look at this phenomenon…

One of Botswana's greatest wonders, the Okavango River Delta

The Okavango River is a mystical sight

Larger Than Life, Giver of Life

“A river rises in mountains and dies in sand and in its dying gives birth to a jewel at the edge of the Kalahari: the Okavango Delta.” – Frans Lanting, National Geographic magazine 1990.

The largest inland delta in the world, the Okavango Delta covers an area roughly the size of Jamaica and can even be seen from space. It’s a world of meandering channels fringed by papyrus plants, with over 150,000 islands scattered throughout.

Imagine a water wonderland where a wealth of animals congregate for a sip, splash, or to hunt down their next meal. Where hippos and crocodiles lurk under the water’s surface, lechwes sprint over marshes, and even large cats typically opposed to water will find a way to snatch their prey.

This mystical delta has made the Okavango the crème de la crème of African safari destinations. The remoteness makes you feel like you are travelling back in time and offers the perfect opportunity for a “digital detox”.

But Where Does The Water Come from?

Most river deltas lead into the sea. However, the Okavango Delta seasonally floods the savannah. So what causes this anomaly of nature?

It all started as a trickle of water in the southern Angolan highlands, which then spilled over and flowed its way through the neighbouring countries, joining forces with the Cuito and Cubango rivers and completing a journey of over 1,000 kilometres, finally pooling to form the fiction-like Okavango Delta.

Shifting Lands Become a Wonderland

The origin of this delta dates back approximately 60,000 years when the Okavango River’s usual flow was disturbed. It used to run into a large lake in the Makgadikgadi Pans region until seismic activity caused the land to shift, forcing the water to spill into the open plains of the Okavango instead and creating this unique delta.

Tripling in size between March and August, the delta grows from approximately 6,000 square kilometres up to a whopping 22,000 square kilometres. And although the water covers such a large area, it’s only about two metres deep.

The flood peaks in August and disappears over the next few months, mainly due to evaporation and plant transpiration.

Even big cats thrive in the watery world that is the Okavango River

The Lifeblood of the Kalahari Desert

The Okavango Delta is one of the last remaining untouched wildlife sanctuaries in the world. One of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa and named the 1,000th UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s described as “an exceptional example of the interaction between climate, hydrological and biological processes”.

The wildlife is also incredibly diverse, with some rare species that thrive here. It’s home to 160 mammals, 155 reptiles, 35 amphibia, 71 fish, 400 birds, and 1,500 plant species. For example, you can look forward to seeing the Big 5, giraffe, zebra, Nile crocodile, cheetah, hyena, kudu, warthog, baboon, and many more.

You also won’t be able to miss the lechwe antelope as there are more than 60,000, and the area is home to one of the largest endangered African wild dog populations in Africa.

Birds of a Feather

When it comes to bird-watching, you’ll be able to spot the rare Pel’s fishing owl, as well as the biggest owl in Africa, Verreaux’s eagle-owl, also commonly known as the milky or giant eagle owl. If you’re more interested in birds of prey, the largest eagle in Africa, the Martial eagle, as well as the African fish eagle both live here.

Where is The Okavango River Delta?

This maze of water is found in the northwest corner of Botswana, bordering the Caprivi Strip and located just south of Angola. It consists of three main geographical areas, namely the Panhandle, Delta and Dryland. A corridor-shaped, 80-kilometre river that runs deep and wide, the Panhandle doesn’t have a lot of wildlife, but a few local communities reside here. It’s also an excellent fishing spot.

The Delta area varies in size depending on the time of year and contains termite mounds that have morphed into islands over time. A number of water-based activities are offered here during the flood.

The famous Chief’s Island is in the Dryland region. The largest island in the Okavango Delta, it’s about 70 kilometres long and 15 kilometres wide, with the richest concentration of wildlife in the country.

When to Go to The Okavango River Delta

This ever-changing landscape means it will look vastly different at various times of the year. During the autumn or green season, between October and April, there’s an increase in predator activity, newborn animals make their debut and bird watching is at its best.

The most popular time to visit the Okavango is during the dry winter season, running from May to September. Skies are clear, and there’s no rain, but it’s also the wettest season as the Okavango is flooded. During this time, the vegetation is sparse, giving you the best view of the wildlife, and you can expect fewer mosquitoes.

In between these seasons, you have what we call the shoulder seasons. Weather conditions can’t be guaranteed, however accommodation rates are generally lower with greater availability.

Activities on The Okavango River Delta

The Okavango’s varied landscapes promise a host of exciting activities. These include photographic safaris, hot air balloon rides, walking safaris, game drives and even horseback safaris.

You can also go on a mokoro safari, your very own Venice experience in Africa. The low angle of the boat and the fact that it can slide silently through the water will give you a front-row view of all the wildlife.

How to Get to The Okavango River Delta

Most lodges have private airstrips nearby, so you can fly straight from Maun or Kasane airport. From there, you’ll be transported to your lodges via vehicle or boat.

Take a look at our curated list of the best Okavango Delta safari lodges to get you dreaming about your Botswana holiday.

A Guide to a Khwai Safari

You’re familiar with the famed Okavango Delta, right? Well, let us introduce you to another facet of its splendour – a Khwai safari. One of Botswana’s most picturesque and predator-rich areas, Khwai unfolds in the northeastern fringes of the Delta, nestled between the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. And, with no fences separating Moremi and Chobe from the Khwai River, a myriad of species naturally saturate this safari hotspot.

A True Showcase of Botswana’s Scenic Grandeur

Split into the Khwai Private Reserve and the Khwai Community Concession, this expansive area covers nearly 400,000 hectares. And, as massive as that may seem, we’ve explored every glorious inch of it!

As you venture into this wild land, you’ll uncover a captivating array of environments. From lagoons and flooded pans to grasslands, bushveld and woodland forests – there’s ample room for nature to flourish.

Seemingly boundless Khwai landscape with grassland, trees and waterways

Not surprisingly, given the vastness of Khwai, we’re often asked: “Where’s the best place to stay to make the most of my Khwai safari?” To address this, let’s begin by highlighting the distinctions between Khwai’s Private Reserve and Community Concession…

We’ll help you decide on the best base to branch out on your Khwai safari, Image Credit: African Bush Camps

Khwai Private Reserve

The Khwai Private Reserve covers 200,000 hectares and benefits from abundant wildlife flowing in from Chobe and Moremi. It features diverse landscapes of open grasslands, waterways, mopane hinterland, and the Khwai riverfront. Exclusivity is its standout feature here, as you can only access the reserve when staying at one of its luxury lodges.

These secluded lodges lie in the northern expanse of the region, where magnificent mopane trees thrive – the perfect setting to truly immerse yourself in nature. Further south, you’ll find the Khwai River, the primary hub for your safari adventures. It’s in this region that the terrain is most favourable for remarkable animal sightings.

While game drives are undoubtedly a Khwai safari essential, what truly distinguishes the lodges in the Khwai Private Reserve is their commitment to enhancing your experience with bespoke activities. Anticipate immersive walking safaris, mokoro (dugout canoe) journeys (when water levels permit), inconspicuous viewing hides, and more.

Khwai Community Concession

Encompassing 180,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, the Khwai Community Concession stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of local Khwai villagers, expertly overseen by the Khwai Development Trust.

While it may draw a slightly higher number of tourists, owing to its accessibility to the public, this extraordinary sanctuary remains a popular choice for those seeking a fulfilling Khwai safari.

But don’t be misled by its “public” status; our admiration for Khwai Community Concession remains steadfast! It’s a place where wildlife movements are aplenty, unencumbered by imposing barriers. So, just like its private counterpart, the community concession basks in the bountiful game that flows from the Moremi and the Chobe National Park.

Within this splendid region, a plethora of lodges and campsites await, catering to a diverse range of preferences, from budget-conscious travellers to connoisseurs of luxury. Moreover, our recommended lodges offer not only exceptional comfort but also unparalleled proximity to the Khwai River.

Although the focus of safari activities in this public concession leans toward land-based activities like game drives and nature walks, some lodges extend the excitement to visits to local communities as well as mokoro safaris if the water levels permit.

Wildlife of Khwai

The Private and Community sections of Khwai are widely considered the best game reserve in Botswana. This is thanks, in part, to the density and diversity of its wild inhabitants. Here, you’ll find a wealth of wildlife and, in particular, hordes of elephant herds meandering through Khwai to get to and from Moremi and Chobe.

Moreover, majestic big cats like lions and leopards share their territory with a wide array of antelope species, including sable, roan, kudu and many more. Additionally, the elusive African wild dog makes momentary appearances while on the move, and the waterways are the haunt of hippos and crocodiles.

Birdlife of Khwai

On a Khwai safari, you’ll find that the birdlife is prolific to boot – offering a spectacular display of species. Raptors reign supreme in the treetops, while saddle-billed and marabou storks elegantly wade through the shallows.

During the wet season, the concession’s limited permanent water source along the Khwai River attracts an even greater variety of aquatic birds. Keep an eye out for a flourish of fish eagles, kingfishers, and the radiant lilac-breasted roller, alongside a multitude of other feathered creatures.

1. Pristine and Private Location

Known for its untouched wilderness and exclusivity, Selinda Game Reserve is one of our favourite hidden safari gems. The region thrives between the wetlands of Linyanti Wildlife Reserve and the legendary Okavango Delta. And it’s here that nature reveals one of its most spectacular creations: the expansive floodplain known as the Selinda Spillway.

The Spillway ebbs and flows, its floods dictated by the whims of rainfall, creating a whimsical spectacle of ever-changing waterways and attracting animals in abundance. Moreover, as a private concession, the reserve offers an intimate safari experience with limited vehicle access and a low number of guests. You’ll have the privilege of exploring vast stretches of wilderness, free from crowds and relishing the feeling of being immersed in nature.

2. Diverse Habitats and Enthralling Scenery

One of the unique features of Selinda Game Reserve is its remarkable variety of ecosystems. From sprawling floodplains to lush woodlands and meandering waterways, the reserve showcases diverse habitats that attract a wide array of wildlife. The scenery creates a beautiful backdrop for your safari, making every moment a visual delight.

3. Unparalleled Wildlife Encounters

From lions navigating river crossings to cheeky hippos asserting dominance, Selinda Game Reserve offers thrilling encounters with wildlife. Home to the endangered African wild dog, Selinda also provides a rare opportunity to observe these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.

With sightings of rare roan antelope, giraffe, buffalo in their masses, and the gentle giant elephant, Selinda Game Reserve captivates with its wealth of wildlife. We can also attest that, thanks to verdant vegetation and waterways, Selinda is a magnet for a menagerie of avian residents, making every moment a delight for the bird enthusiasts amongst us.

Optimal Time to Travel to Selinda

To make the most of your safari experience in Selinda Game Reserve, it’s essential to consider the best time to visit. The dry season, from May to October, is generally regarded as ideal. During this period, the vegetation thins out, and animals gather around water sources, making wildlife sightings more frequent and concentrated.

Additionally, the cooler temperatures also ensure more comfortable game drives and outdoor activities. However, it’s worth noting that each season offers its own unique charm, so consult with our Travel Experts to tailor your safari adventure according to your preferences.

Bianca’s Botswana Breakdown

We took our Travel Expert Bianca aside to learn more about why she fell in love with Botswana, as well as her hot tips about travelling here.

1. How Does Botswana Compare to Other Safari Destinations in Africa?

You cannot compare it to anything else really. It’s very unique and very different to any other safari destination. A safari in Botswana is very diverse, from Chobe National Park, Savuti, Linyanti and Selinda to the Okavango DeltaKalahari, and Makgadikgadi – it has an enormous diversity of ecosystems and activities.

Unlike the Kruger National Park, Botswana isn’t as saturated with Big 5 wildlife – but you can still see lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo (if you know where to go) along with quite a number of other unique species that are endemic to the region. Seasonally, it is also a spectacular birding haven.

Compared to countries like South AfricaZambia and Zimbabwe, I’ve found that a safari in Botswana is best done over a longer period with more locations to fully appreciate its boundless biodiversity. The guiding is also very authentic, with the guides having grown up there and are very tuned into the bush.

2. What is the Most Underrated Aspect of a Safari in Botswana?

There’s nothing underrated when it comes to a safari in Botswana – it’s very highly rated! But, if I had to nit pick, I would say the Green and Shoulder seasons are “underrated”.

These lower-priced periods of the year still offer exceptional safari experiences, showcasing stunning landscapes, sunsets, expansive vistas, and incredible wildlife throughout. Having personally explored Botswana during these seasons, I can attest to their year-round allure.

3. What Aspects of Botswana’s Wildlife Do You Find Most Compelling?

The birdlife – it’s just something out of this world. And the elephants swimming across rivers from island to island, which is very unique to Botswana.

4. What Advice Would You Give Someone Planning a Botswana Safari?

If possible, one must stay at a land and water camp on a private concession or a land camp and water camp combined in the Okavango Delta, if budget and time allow.

The Chobe region is also an amazing experience in the dry season. Here, you won’t want to miss those massive elephant herds, and the boating safaris are pretty spectacular too. Also, Linyanti would be a great add-on.

However, for me, the main focus will be the Okavango Delta and then add on other destinations based on budget, time and preferences – one MUST experience the boating in the channels. This is what really sets Botswana apart!

Bianca’s Take on the Camps

5. What Were Your Favourite Aspects of Each Camp You Stayed at?

They’re all totally different. Botswana is a very complex destination as some regions may be dry in March, but, come July, they will be swelling with water and so on. As such, the activities – in terms of water vs land-based safaris – may vary depending on the time of the year. However, here are my first impressions from my latest trip in March this year…

Duma Tau

Duma Tau is in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve (a private area connected to Savuti and Chobe) and has all-year water from the Linyanti Channel. The lodge sits on the channel and has sunsets like I’ve never seen before and the most amazing bird life I’ve ever encountered on safari (GREEN SEASON!). I saw seven different eagle species on one game drive.

The area is much drier than the Okavango Delta but has water all year due to the Linyanti Channel. There are very few lodges in the area, so it feels very exclusive in this vast private reserve – like you’re really in the wild with nobody around.

Vumbura Plains

Vumbura Plains is a massive private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve in the extreme north of the Okavango Delta. It’s one of the few land and water camps available in Botswana (all year round). So, you can do the boating, mokoro and game drives throughout the year – the game viewing is absolutely spectacular, and the lodge is unique and beautiful.

Jao Camp

Jao Camp, in the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta, was just mind-blowingly beautiful. It’s one of the most amazing camps I’ve stayed at, and absolutely beyond incredible on all levels.

It’s hard to believe that it’s benchmarked around the same price as Duma Tau and Vumbura, but this has to do with the game viewing opportunities – which were actually brilliant!

Lion sighting on a game drive

The wealth of wildlife at Jao Camp never fails to thrill, Image Credit: Wilderness Jao

However, I visited Jao Camp in the green season, so there was no flooding, thus no water around on the concession. But, come the dry season, it’s mainly just water-based safaris. That being said, in the wet season, it is essential to combine Jao with a land camp such as Vumbura Plains to get the best of both land- and water-based safari activities.

6. Were There Any Particular Wildlife Sightings That Stood Out for You?

Chasing wild dogs on the hunt for over an hour, very exciting, bruised butts and hips after – lots of laughter, and we did not see them take anything down, but the thrill was something else.

Conservation, Community, and Sustainability

7. Were There Impactful Initiatives at The Camps That Impressed You?

Duma Tau, Vumbura Plains, and Jao Camp all fall under the Wilderness Safaris umbrella. Wilderness is a non-profit travel organisation, and their entire modus operandi is the upliftment of communities, protection of wilderness areas and, of course, the wildlife.

You’ll see that all the camps are community drivers, and the concessions are all owned by local tribes who benefit from it. ALL staff are from Botswana, bar a few from South Africa, usually in management positions, with the purpose of training up local managers. ALL the staff come from the local communities and are uplifted by the lodges.

There are fewer bums on seats, which aids higher incomes for the staff and lessens the footprint in the area – it’s ALL about conservation.

8. Are There Any Anecdotes from Your Trip You’d Like to Share?

Not that I can think of – a safari in Botswana is an all-encompassing and meditative experience, it’s very wild and very untouched, and it changes you from within. If you don’t have a “burst into tears” moment in Botswana, then that would be unusual. It can be so overwhelming that it can bring you to tears – but for me personally, any safari can do this.

Jen and Scott’s Impromptu Proposal in Africa

Botswana,Special Features,Zambia,Zimbabwe

Here at Rhino Africa, we absolutely LOVE hearing our traveller’s tales about their trips to Africa. And in the spirit of the month of love, one story really stands out. Here is the heartwarming tale of an impromptu proposal in Africa.

Proposal at sunset

Africa is a romantic rendezvous surrounded by Mother Nature

It Started with a Wedding

“The trip was originally to go to a wedding. Jen did her gap year in Botswana, and one of her housemates stayed on and was getting married. Thus Brycewana 2016 was born!” – Leslie Bryce.

Get ready to hear a tale of wild wanderlust and unexpected family undertakings…

Once upon a time, a band of intrepid explorers (aka the Bryce family) set off for Botswana, or as they called it, “Brycewana 2016” – an epic escapade with a seriously snazzy name.

The gang’s main mission? To attend a wedding, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. Among the merry travellers were the dynamic duo (and cutest couple), Jen and Scott, who brought their A-game to the adventure.

But wait, there’s more! Jen’s father, Richard, hailed from Zimbabwe, so the gang kicked off their journey in Zimbabwe and Zambia, taking in the stunning scenery of Victoria Falls!

Victoria Falls

So there they were, a clan of eight, soaking up the majestic sights of Victoria Falls – that wonder of wonders, UNESCO World Heritage Site, and all-around jaw-dropper. And boy, oh boy, there’s no shortage of shenanigans to be had here!

For the thrill-seekers among us, there’s Devil’s Pool – a heart-racing swim on the brink of the Falls – as well as bungee jumping, zip-lining, and micro lighting. But if you’re after something a little less wild, fear not! The region also offers sunset cruises, marvellous walking tours, and so much more.

Once our favourite family had their fill of wonder and waterfalls, the real magic materialised when making their way into the untamed wilderness of Botswana. With a little help from Rhino Africa’s travel gurus, it was a trip like no other; full of laughter, life-changing moments, and a whole lot of love!

Aerial view of Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is the largest sheet of falling water in the world

Botswana

From lunar-like desert landscapes and open grasslands to riverine forests and papyrus-lined canals, Botswana delivers the very best in land and water safari experiences.

There are some seriously stunning spots to explore – like the Chobe National Park and the Makgadikgadi Pans – but nothing quite beats the fame (and fabulousness) of the Okavango Delta. It was an absolute no-brainer for the Bryce squad of eight to set up camp there.

Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp

“The guides were all fantastic, food was superb, and accommodation was great.” – Leslie Bryce.

The fam’s first hideaway haven was none other than Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp – known for its elegant tented suites and sweeping vistas of the surrounding Okavango Delta.

Packed with prime wildlife and bird-watching hotspots, Nxabega had all the makings of a close-up African safari encounter. And with plenty of privacy, the lovebirds, Jen and Scott, could easily cosy up and connect as a couple.

Little Machaba Camp

The family’s second sanctuary of solitude was that of Little Machaba Camp. This gem, nestled in the nooks of the Okavango Delta’s northeastern realm, is beyond compare – serving major retro vibes with its top-of-the-line living quarters that take you back to the 1950s safari era.

But the best part about this spot? You don’t even have to step outside your tent to catch sight of majestic creatures prowling the vast floodplains. Talk about spellbinding! And it’s perfect for intimate celebrations, too. So perfect that Scott got down on one knee and popped the question to Jen in this dreamy, fairytale setting.

She Said Yes!

“We’d certainly use Rhino Africa again on future trips to Africa – our daughter got engaged on this trip, so maybe a wedding sometime soon!” – Leslie Bryce.

We are over the moon that Jen said yes to Scott’s proposal in such an enchanting setting. We wish you all the happiness in the world and hope you’ll return to Africa one day to celebrate where your love story began – we promise to make it just as special as Brycewana 2016!

Another memorable romantic activity is a private dinner in the bush, where couples can dine under a blanket of stars while listening to the symphony of the Okavango Delta’s nightlife.

Adventure in the Okavango Delta

Embark on an unforgettable adventure as you navigate through narrow waterways and discover hidden islands that are inaccessible throughout the rest of the year.

Experience the authentic way of transport of the Okavango Delta bushmen and glide through the picturesque rivulets while eerie reed banks stand guard on either side. And don’t forget to keep an eye out for hungry hippos and those inconspicuous crocodiles that will delight you and make your heart beat even faster!

Filled with so many sights, sounds and sagas, there are many things that you can ONLY do in Africa and nowhere else on the planet. From extraordinary wildlife and life-changing adventures to unexpected guests at your breakfast table, there’s no shortage of unique experiences in Africa. Here’s a sneak peek into some things you can only do when visiting our spectacular continent.

Visiting Penguins on South African Shores

Thanks to animated films such as Happy Feet and Surfs Up, we quickly equate penguins to the icy lands of Antarctica. But did you know that Africa has her own special share of penguins too? Adding to your list of unique experiences in Africa, make your way to the continent’s southwestern coast to view these waddling aquatic birds (aka African penguins).

There are a number of colonies found between Namibia and South Africa’s South Coast. However, Boulders Beach near Cape Town is their most famous colony and is one of the only places in the world where one can actually swim among penguins as they tend to explore the surrounding beaches.

Visiting Boulders Beach’s penguins is one of our must-do unique experiences in Africa

Exploring the Oldest Desert in the World

Discover ancient wonders of the oldest desert in the world. The Namib Desert in Namibia opens up a world of fascinating history dating back as far as 80 million years. The relentless desert is dotted with innumerable undulating dunes extending for a whopping 2,000 kilometres from the Olifants River in South Africa to the Carunjamba River in Angola, encompassing Namibia’s entire coastline in the process.

Since the early Stone Age, people have lived in the Namib Desert, leaving behind well-preserved tools, ceramics, and rock paintings. Besides antiquity, the region also boasts most of Namibia’s most famous attractions. Relish the hospitality of quaint towns all the while enjoying safari, hiking, fishing, 4X4 trails, bird watching, beach vacations, hot air ballooning over mesmerising dunes and more. The sun-baked activities in the Namib Desert are countless and add to the unique experiences in Africa.

Gliding Silently Along The Okavango Delta

Few things beat the tranquil experience of gliding through the narrow water channels of Botswana’s bewitching Okavango DeltaLinyanti and Moremi regions via mokoro. But what is a mokoro? Thousands of years ago, bushmen used dug-out canoes (called mokoros) to effortlessly navigate through Botswana’s tendril-like waterways. And today, the mokoro has developed into an unmistakable emblem of the Delta.

A truly unforgettable experience is gliding silently above mirror-like bodies of water in one of the most breathtaking locations on earth. Soak up views of hippos, elephants and crocodiles as you gracefully fly through calm waters enveloped in serenity. Very much like the gondolas of Venice (without the singing, of course), your mokoro poler will propel your vessel through wildlife-rich channels, giving you the freedom to absorb nature to its fullest.

Enjoying Breakfast with Beautiful Big-Eyed Giraffes

Where on earth can you savour a sumptuous morning meal together with the world’s tallest living terrestrial animal? Well, there’s a place in Africa for that… Giraffe Manor. Arguably the most famous lodge in Kenya, Giraffe Manor is a grand boutique hotel that has gained worldwide acclaim thanks to its resident herd of endangered Rothschild’s giraffe. Breakfast with these exquisite beasts is undeniably one of the top unique experiences in Africa.

Observe these magnificent animals as they freely roam the estate or enjoy breakfast as they pop their towering heads through the window to wish you a fine morning. Visitors frequently remark that the hotel feels like it’s straight out of the movie Out of Africa because of its regal exterior, exquisite interior, lush green gardens, sunny terraces, and charming courtyards.

Going Chimpanzee and Gorilla Trekking

Other than Africa, there’s nowhere else in the world where you can embark on a bold expedition through dense forest terrain in search of wild chimpanzees and gorillas in their natural habitat. Both chimpanzee and gorilla trekking in Africa is one of the most exclusive and heart-stirring experiences. And we’re happy to brag that we’ve welcomed thousands of delighted guests to RwandaUganda and the Congo to meet these prestigious primates!

These three African nations are the only places on the planet where you can see the mountain gorilla and chimpanzees in the wild. Together with experienced guides, spend adventure-filled days trekking flourishing jungle terrain and verdant volcanic slopes in search of these gentle creatures. Once found, sit back in silence as you observe their fascinating family dynamics.

Meeting Authentic San, Maasai and Himba People

Africa is the origin of countless authentic tribes, with an estimated 3,000, ranging from the San people of Southern Africa to the Maasai of central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. To really add texture to your African adventure we highly recommend you spend some time with these captivating indigenous communities.

Many lodges offer cultural experiences where you can meet and interact with traditional tribes. Meet the San people to gain valuable insight into how they have lived off the land for tens of thousands of years. The Maasai tribes are also fascinating with their many piercings and extensive work with beads, while the Himba people, found in northern Namibia, have an unusual yet beautiful aesthetic with their skin and hair concealed in butterfat and ochre pigment.

Witnessing The Big 5 on Safari

Boy, oh boy – we just love boasting about our Big 5! And you will find many prestigious Big 5 reserves peppered throughout our beautiful continent. Five mammals of the animal kingdom remain the reigning royals of the safari world. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.

An experience that’s undoubtedly unique to Africa has to be the Big 5 safari. And we can tell you from personal experience that nothing compares to seeing these animals in real life! Thankfully, you can find them in several African countries, from Kenya and Namibia to Botswana and South Africa. However, the most notable place packed with Big 5 wildlife has to be the Kruger National Park.

Visiting Two Nobel Prize Winners’ Hometown

Just about every tour through the sweeping township of Soweto stops at Vilakazi Street. And there’s reason enough. It’s probably the most famous street in South Africa as it’s the only one to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners, namely Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The biggest urban settlement in Africa, established in the 1930s, Soweto is a must-see when stopping in Johannesburg. A visit here will not only take you to the legendary lane of Vilakazi but also opens up a vibrant, bustling world of urban life in South Africa. Discover off-the-beaten-path places, meet the locals and learn about the rich aspects of township life.

Swimming On the Edge in Nature’s Infinity Pool

Looking for unique experiences in Africa with more thrill? Devil’s Pool. The name sounds ominous for a reason. An infinity pool with a startling difference, Devil’s Pool is a rock pool found at the edge of the majestic Victoria Falls. Ordinarily, during the waterfall’s peak flow around June, the mile-wide chasm is filled with the thunder of water descending at a rate of 3,000 tonnes per second. During this time, if you entered Devil’s Pool, you would be swept away to an untimely demise.

However, you can swim as close to the edge of the pool from September to December when the river flow is at a safe level. This is because the exposed natural rock walls act as a barrier to prevent you from being carried over. The experience itself may be scary, but the view from the edge is truly breathtaking.

Africa should be on the top of every aspiring content creator’s bucket list. Offering the most spectacular natural sights on the planet, the possibilities to capture brag-worthy content are endless! From beckoning white sandy beaches on Indian Ocean islands to spotting the Big 5 roaming wide-open plains, the chance to take breathtaking content exists all across our magnificent continent. So, pack your camera, tripod, and video equipment and ensure your phone is fully charged because you don’t want to miss the chance to capture your memories in our top 10 most Instagrammable places in Africa!

Africa is home to some of the most Instagrammable places in the world

1. Cape Town, South Africa

Not just one of the most Instagrammable places in Africa, Cape Town is probably one of the most Instagrammable spots in the world. Home to Table Mountain, rolling Winelands and sandy beaches, I’m sure it comes as no surprise that South Africa’s Mother City is number one! With captivating natural scenery and bustling aesthetic hotspots, your followers are in for a treat.

Swim at Boulders Beach, where adorable penguins waddle along the sand and paddle through the waves. Or hike to the top of Lion’s Head for a panoramic timelapse of the most stunning sunsets. Adventurers can also paraglide off Signal Hill with your GoPro for impressive action shots of the city, beaches and the iconic Table Mountain! Therefore, Cape Town is a must for anyone seeking a leisure-filled Instagrammable holiday destination.

2. Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe/Zambia

No list of the most Instagrammable places in Africa would be complete without including one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls. This largest sheet of falling water forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and offers plenty of fantastic opportunities to see, hear and capture this extraordinary spectacle.

Cruise along the Zambezi River, drink in hand on a sunset boat trip. Or the brave can take a dip in Devil’s Pool for an up-close view of the sheer drop over the side of the Falls. Adrenaline seekers will also enjoy zip-lining across the gorge, suspended above the breathtakingly beautiful Zambezi River, which is perfect for capturing unique Reels content! Therefore, the photo ops here are endless, with a plethora of activities for both adventure seekers and laidback guests.

3. Amboseli National Park, Kenya

The Amboseli National Park boasts the magnificent backdrop of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. The park has a variety of wildlife, but its most celebrated resident is the African elephant. Despite being in Kenya, Amboseli offers some of the most exquisite views of Africa’s tallest mountain, providing iconic scenery for your photos and videos.

Elephants are in abundance in Amboseli, frolicking in the marshes, strolling through the dusty plains, and posing for awe-struck, camera-wielding tourists, with Mount Kilimanjaro to set the scene. The photo opportunities are best first thing in the morning, so don’t skip your morning game drives!

4. Sossusvlei, Namibia

The Namib Desert is a true canvas of beauty that allows you to reconnect with yourself and nature. Sossusvlei is one of Namibia’s most well-known and photographed locations. With vast expanses of rust-red dunes, bleached-white pans and endless deep blue skies, could it get any better than this?

The sand in the Sossusvlei region is estimated to be around 5 million years old. And with its pronounced dune shadows, distinctive red-coloured sand and the exceptional clarity of light, this is an exceptionally photogenic location. Sossusvlei also has some of the darkest night skies on earth, making it the ultimate spot for stargazing and taking incredible photos of the star-studded sky.

5. Okavango Delta, Botswana

Known as “the river that never finds the sea”, Botswana’s Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world. This expansive, largely undisturbed wetland of twisting oxbow streams is home to a diverse variety of wildlife, extensive floodplains and riverine woodland. And here, you’ll find opportune moments to capture the best content around every corner of the Delta’s islands and canals.

Grab your GoPro and take a ride in a traditional mokoro (dug-out canoe) down the Okavango Delta’s waterways. Or embark on a scenic helicopter flight for the opportunity to take unique birds-eye-view photos. If you’re a keen photographer, a helicopter with no doors will allow for unrestricted panoramic views.

6. Kruger National Park, South Africa

The Kruger National Park needs no upselling, as it’s always dressed to impress. Rated consistently as one of Africa’s most exceptional safari experiences, Kruger is home to South Africa’s leading private luxury lodges. It also promises some of the world’s best wildlife viewing, easily making this one of the most Instagrammable places in Africa for creating surreal wildlife content.

If you ever wanted the chance to capture picture-perfect photos of the Big 5 in their natural environment, the national park is the destination for you. But safari excursions don’t have to mean roughing it, as silver-plated service and swimming pools are on the menu making for magnificent safari Reels!

There are few better places on Earth to see big game than in the Kruger National Park

7. Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Is your Instagram feed lacking some greenery? Volcanoes National Park protects the thickly forested slopes of the spectacular Virunga Mountain Range in Rwanda’s far northwestern region. Not only is it breathtaking, but the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range are home to roughly half of the world’s wild population of endangered mountain gorillas.

Make sure you’ve packed your tripod, extra memory cards and power banks because there’s something for everyone to enjoy here. From hiking to mountain biking, canoeing to village visits – your photo library will be overflowing! Furthermore, the volcanoes provide the most luscious jungle scenery for gorilla trekking. And these intimate, up-close interactions will make for the most memorable photos.

8. Mahé, Seychelles

Don’t forget to add Seychelles to your bucket list of Instagrammable places in Africa, as this beautiful continent has so much more to offer than safaris. The Indian Ocean archipelago of Seychelles has picturesque white, sandy beaches and azure waters, all teeming with extraordinary bird, plant and marine life, making for the most striking underwater photos.

Home to dozens of pristine beaches, this is a fantastic location for beautiful beach photoshoots, sipping cocktails out of coconuts and exploring untouched stretches of soft white sand. In other words, it’s perfect for all kinds of selfies! Mahé is a destination for thrill-seekers, explorers, and adventurers, so make sure you have a few extra memory cards on hand!

9. Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is located in the middle of dry northeastern Botswana. All of our most Instagrammable places in Africa have something special about them, and the Makgadikgadi Pans is no exception. This collection of salt flats is one of the biggest in the world, and used to be a huge lake that has since evaporated.

The Makgadikgadi Pans provide one-of-a-kind safari experiences, including walking and driving safaris, birdwatching, quad biking and meerkat encounters. One can also participate in excursions to historical sights to learn about the connection between the natural environment and the ancient culture that once existed there. Sunsets and spending time with meerkats make the Makgadikagadi Pans one of Africa’s most Instagrammable places.

10. Maasai Mara, Kenya

What would your travel profile be without a few snaps of the famous Great Migration? The Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya is a vast expanse of gently rolling African plains with stunning views and spectacularly diverse wildlife. This reserve is home to several luxury lodges and camps where guests can immerse themselves in an authentic East African safari experience – in style.

This reserve is a photographer and naturalist’s dream, offering many exciting activities, from year-round game viewing to witnessing the famous Great Migration. However, a hot air balloon safari is one of our favourite experiences you can partake in here! Imagine gliding gracefully over the African plains, watching elephants, buffalo and cheetahs roaming freely among migratory wildebeest and zebra below.

David Ryan’s Favourite African Safari Experience

Meet our Rhino Travel Experts,Special Features,Travel Tips

As the CEO and Founder of Rhino Africa, my life’s work has been dedicated to creating life-changing journeys to Africa, for Rhino Africa’s guests from around the world. Firm in my belief that travel has the ability to change the world; the game-changing force that uplifts communities and protects our endangered wildlife. Tourism enriches all our lives, and promises the best opportunity for community upliftment, through the creation of stable and sustainable employment opportunities in rural African areas.

David Ryan, CEO & founder of Rhino Africa, on a photo safari
David Ryan, CEO & Founder of Rhino Africa

Every day I am reminded what a privilege it is to be African. As I bring my young family up here, I am constantly in awe of how blessed we are to have Africa’s people, wildlife, and landscapes as our everyday mentor, inspiration, and guide. There is simply no end to the kindness, beauty, and talent found on this continent, and it is this passion that lights our fire and drives our vision of creating a lasting impact on this continent we all call home.

David’s perfect Travel Itinerary

Guests often ask me, “given a choice – do you prefer bush or beach?” As someone that always prefers to dine from the buffet of life, my usual retort is, “Why choose one when you can have the best of both?!”.

The truth is I really couldn’t choose! Africa’s wildlife and landscapes are as equally alluring as the azure blue water of the Indian Ocean Islands. Choosing the ultimate “bush and beach” combination on the other hand is easy; Botswana’s Okavango Delta and one of the Seychelles’ many private islands.

David Ryan recommends a visit to the Seychelles
Seychelles: Combine the Okavango Delta with this island paradise

A combination originally designed as the ultimate Royal Honeymoon; I think William and Kate make for a fair testimonial! The low volume, high value tourism proposition of Botswana and the Seychelles now make it the perfect “social distancing” holiday, quite ironic really!

What makes the Okavango special?

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland Delta in the world. It’s made up of an intricate network of channels & lagoons, and with over 150,000 islands it is one of Africa’s vast unspoiled and pristine wilderness areas teeming with wildlife. It is simply breathtaking and should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Aerial view of the Okavango Delta in Botswana
Special moment: The seasonal floods return to the Okavango Delta

There is no shortage of comfort and style in the many Camps and Lodges dotted around this 15,000 square kilometer wilderness, but it is the experience that will leave you truly changed. Reminisce fireside about your day’s game viewing by mokoro (dugout canoe), boat or land rover. Wake to the loud grumbling of an elephant’s tummy and lie silent and still in your luxury tent while it grazes only a stone’s throw away. Experience sunsets unlike any other, as the sun dips on another day that will undoubtedly leave you forever changed.

Elephant in Okavango Delta floods
Experience the wild heart of Africa in the Okavango Delta

There are so many reasons to visit the Okavango Delta, but here a few of mine:

  • Enjoy a mokoro safari – a traditional dugout canoe
  • Sip the Delta waters – the largest water filter in the world!
  • Pit your skills, wit and rod against a Delta tiger fish
  • Listen to an elephant feeding next to your tent
  • Watch out for a pels fishing owl – at the top of every birders list!
  • Get face to face with Jabu the Elephant at Stanley’s Camp
  • Go on an evening safari to photograph crocodiles, aardvark and pangolin if you are really lucky
  • 550 species of birds in the Delta
  • The Okavango Delta is the wildlife capital of Africa

The Seychelles – exclusive Island Royalty

Situated in the western waters of the Indian Ocean, off the east coast of Africa, the Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 islands scattered across the deep blue sea. The islands are home to white sand beaches and tropical forest while the iridescent waters are filled with pristine coral reefs, tropical fish and an array of marine life. Tell me your bags are not already packed.

David exploring the underwater wonders in the Seychelles

Towering palms frame rustic retreats which open up onto this unspoiled getaway – it not only feels like paradise – it really is! If discovering untouched beaches, exploring private coves for snorkelling and swimming, going scuba diving among a kaleidoscope of coral reefs and tropical fish, taking a stroll through traditional markets, or hop aboard a sailing boat is your idea of the perfect holiday, then the Seychelles is the perfect destination for you. Here you don’t just choose a hotel, you choose an island!

One of David Ryan's favourite African Safari Experience: Seychelles
Who wouldn’t love to relax on this beach?

Again there are so many reasons to visit the Seychelles, but here a few of mine:

  • Silky sand and crystal clear waters
  • Palm-fringed beaches and colourful coral reefs
  • Sumptuous seafood and cocktails
  • 115 breathtaking islands
  • Dive amongst colourful tropical fish and corals
  • Perfect all-year round with 365 days of sunshine!

I like to think of life as an “AND” not and “OR” and if you are going to combine two of Africa’s bucket list destinations, Botswana and Seychelles are the ultimate combination!

Rhino Africa’s Top 10 off-the-beaten-track destinations in Africa

Destinations,The Bucket List

Our selection of off the beaten track destinations

As African experts, we’ve selected our 10 best “off-the-beaten-track” destinations for you. The destinations and properties we’ve chosen are the ones that have stuck with us from our travels over the years, whether for their sustainable approach, level of luxury or sheer beauty and remoteness. We hope you’ll enjoy exploring these unique off-the-beaten-track African destinations as much as we have.

Here they are, in no particular order:

off-the-beaten-track-destinations-zebras
The Great Migration contains over 2 million animals, including 300,000 zebras and a whole assortment of antelope

Destination #1: Serengeti

Why? The Serengeti plays host to the greatest mammal migration on earth with Big 5 sightings in bounds. See it from above in a hot air balloon as well as on a game drive.

Stay: Singita Explore Mobile Tented Camp in the Grumeti Game Reserve – it’s Singita’s latest, mobile, luxury-tented property and ideal because it moves with the migration so you can see this animal spectacle in full glory. It’s also eco-friendly and designed to keep environmental impact at a minimum.

Tour: Our Tanzania Safari and Beach Tour

off-the-beaten-track-destinations-mozambique-bazaruto
Incredible views from the island of Bazaruto, Mozambique.

Destination #2: Quirimbas Archipelago, Mozambique

Why? The Quirimbas Archipelago in Mozambique is one of southern Africa’s premier beach destinations and contains its own collection of over 30 islands off the coast of Pemba. It is more private, exclusive, and off the beaten track than Bazaruto as it is harder to reach and there are therefore fewer tourists. Couple it with mangroves, coral reefs, and palms in abundance, and Robinson Crusoe himself would turn palm green with envy.

Stay: Medjumbe Private Island Resort This luxurious hotel is located on a private island in the Quirimbas Archipelago a 40-minute flight from Pemba.

Tour: Sian’s Mozambican Escape

Destination #3: Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango Delta

Why? The Okavango Delta is a must for African enthusiasts and absolutely had to be in our top 3 of the best off the beaten track destinations. We recommend exploring it from the Moremi Game Reserve. Moremi offers both, water- and land-based safari activities. Moreover, the game and birdlife viewing here is second to none.

Stay: Xakanaxa Camp, on the banks of the Khwai River and Xakanaxa Lagoon in the heart of the Reserve. It offers all activities, including Mokoro trips.

Tour: Okavango – Chobe – Vic Falls

off-the-beaten-track-destinations-damaraland
Dunes and dry grassland with mountains in the background in Namibian Damaraland

Destination #4: Damaraland and Skeleton Coast, Namibia

Why? Firstly, Damaraland and the Skeleton Coast in Namibia are spectacular self-drive destinations with several highlights and unique geology. Secondly, Damaraland is also the scene of our own Challange4ACause cycle, an annual event to raise funds to help protect the endangered desert-adapted black rhino, indigenous to the region.

Stay: In Damaraland Mowani Mountain Camp – a luxury safari lodge built into and around the rocky mountainside that lays claim to the best view in Namibia. In Skeleton Coast – Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp. An honourable mention must go to Serra Cafema, which is on the Kunene River, on the edge of the Namib Desert and the Skeleton Coast Park.

Tour: Self-Drive Tour Through Namibia and Botswana

off-the-beaten-track-destinations-thornybush-game-lodge
A pool with a view of the bush, photo: Thornybush Game Lodge

Destination #5: Thornybush Game Reserve

Why? Most people think of the Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sand Game Reserve when it comes to South African safaris, but Thornybush Game Reserve is lesser known and therefore unique in its own way. It lies adjacent to the Kruger National Park. The game rangers and trackers here are among the best qualified and experienced in South Africa and it is one of the few places you can still see black rhino in South Africa.

Stay: Royal Malewane – this is an über exclusive luxury lodge with a spectacular spa

Tour: Cape Town – Kruger – Vic Falls. We can replace any of the Kruger properties with Royal Malewane.

off-the-beaten-tracks-destinations-madagascar
Sunset on Madagascar Baobabs

Destination #6: Nosy Iranja, Madagascar

Why? Nosy Iranja in Madagascar consists of two idyllic islands some 30 miles south of Nosy Be. The island is famous for its turtle population and you can see babies hatching and scurrying across the sand. In addition, you can also watch lemurs playing. They can be seen further afield off Nosy Iranja at the Lemur sanctuary on Nosy Komba, and further east and south in the island’s lush forests.

Stay: Constance Tsarabanjina – located on an unspoilt private island.

Destination #7: Mnemba Island, Zanzibar

Why? Mnemba is renowned as one of the most romantic ocean destinations in the world with some of the world’s most beautiful dive sites. It is an exclusive island just 4.5 kilometres off the north-eastern tip of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean.

Stay: Mnemba Island Lodge offers rustic luxury surrounded by an atoll of breathtaking coral reefs and boasts some of Africa’s most wonderful dive sites.

Tour: Serengeti – Ngorongoro – Zanzibar

off-the-beaten-track-destinations-kalahari-desert
Sunset on the Kalahari Desert

Destination #8: Tswalu Kalahari

Why? For the simple reason that the Kalahari always promises things you can never see elsewhere. This is why it’s one of our favourite off-the-beaten-track destinations in South Africa. Moreover, Tswalu Kalahari is malaria free and a great Big 5 safari destination. Additionally, it is also the largest private Game Reserve in South Africa. Watch out for meerkats, a family of these adorable little creatures may all of a sudden appear during your visit.

Stay: Tswalu Motse Lodge, the epitome of African safari chic.

Tour: Luxury Southern Africa Safari Experience

off-the-beaten-track-destinations-whales-route
Whales on the Whale Route, South Africa

Destination #9: Whale Route on South Africa’s Garden Route

Why? Because the Whale Route runs from Cape Town to Cape Agulhas and offers malaria-free safaris, not to mention the Marine 5 spotting. If you’ve seen the Big 5, it’s time to add the Marine 5 to the bucket list too!

Stay: Grootbos Nature Reserve. Go whale-watching and on Marine 5 safaris, dive with great white sharks, go on guided horseback tours, and coupled it with walks and 4×4 tours through the reserve. Stay in either the Garden Lodge, Forest Lodge, or Villa.

off-the-beaten-track-destinations-volcanoes-national-park
Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Photo: Bisate Lodge

Destination #10: Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Why? The Volcanoes National Park is home to five of the eight volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains, which are covered in rainforest and bamboo. Moreover, this is where you’ll be able to track gorillas on a safari through the forests.

Stay: The eco-friendly Virunga Lodge boasts one of the most stunning locations anywhere in Africa. Since it is just an hour from the Volcanoes National Park entrance, where all gorilla trekking activities leave from, you can easily include this destination in your Rwanda itinerary.
