1. Singita Mara River Tented Camp, Tanzania

The gorgeous Lamai Triangle of the northern Serengeti, Tanzania, is home to Singita Mara Tented Camp and is what luxury safari dreams are made of! It’s one of our favourite places to stay in Africa to witness the hundreds of thousands of wildebeest brave the crocodile-infested waters in their tireless Great Migration journey across the Mara River.

And as a base from which to experience this, Singita Mara is truly a sight to behold. It features whimsical, bohemian vibes and flowing white canvas subtly combined with a colourful palette inspired by the local Maasai tribe.

Who’s it for?

This camp is the perfect spot for catching the Great Migration’s annual Mara River crossing. But even when the wildebeest aren’t making their grand trek, the game viewing is still top-notch, making it a great option for safari enthusiasts, birdwatchers, and nature lovers of all stripes.

Plus, with its remote and luxurious eco-friendly setup, couples, solo adventurers, and families with older kids will enjoy staying here.

Highlights

  • You can expect elegant luxury in the pristine wilderness of northwestern Serengeti National Park
  • It’s very remote and exclusive as it’s the only permanent camp in the Lamai Triangle
  • A tented eco-camp offering a more intimate exchange between yourself and nature
  • The Mara River is one of the best places to experience Great Migration river crossings
  • It’s still a great year-round safari destination, even when the wildebeest are not passing through

An Indulgent Breakfast at MannaBay

Accommodation

It’s the middle of winter, 7:25 am and the rain patters softly on the car roof. I’m in anticipation of spending the morning relishing the delectable breakfast prepared by MannaBay’s professional chefs. As I walk through the tall gates and get to the front door, my eyes are immediately drawn to the warmth and vibrancy of the boutique hotel. It doesn’t matter where you look, every direction brings a delightful surprise – the thought-provoking artworks, the tiny starfishes in the fish tank, the chandelier, the glistening mosaic of MannaBay’s logo and the winter cold is quickly forgotten.

Breakfast is served

We are greeted by warm smiles and led up the stairs to the living area of the hotel, which looks so inviting and cosy, but in a way that makes you feel like royalty. The kitchen is open and you can watch the chefs prepare your meal from the dining area and the lounge. Our servers show us to our table, elegantly set and facing the floor-to-ceiling windows that show the city of Cape Town as it awakes from its slumber. The fog has rolled in and the city lights are twinkling. Our eyes roam over to the wooden table laden with a variety of spreads – there’s something for every taste!

From freshly squeezed juices to coffee (in glass cups that feel like it floats in your hand) and soothing tea of your choice served in antique silver teapots, everything is extraordinary and luxurious. Who knew something so simple as fruit salad and yoghurt could be so elegantly served and enjoyed with splendid views? We were invited to indulge in every little treat laid before us, and we did.

It is clear MannaBay’s chefs are passionate about their creations and love sharing the joy of delightful tastes with their guests.

A Look Inside The Exclusive Ellerman House

Accommodation,Cape Town
2 comments

The journey to Ellerman House is a winding tour of Kloof Nek, the perfect vantage from where Camps Bay,  one of the most beautiful beaches in Africa and Robben Island can be viewed. Somehow hidden above and over this heel is a stately haven that, at first glance, is a palatial private home.

Vistas of Ellerman House

When you explore the interior at Ellerman House you quickly find that this assumption is not that far off the mark. This is a place where people retreat to feel at home.  Understated and inconspicuous,  it is perfect for those seeking privacy, warmth and familiarity.

Ellerman House is a boutique hotel with a selection of tastefully decorated rooms and two modern villas. It is artfully concealed within a line of beautiful houses at the top of  the exclusive Bantry Bay neighbourhood.

Each year, this retreat draws a loyal set of visitors who yearn for exclusivity and easy access to Cape Town attractions. Almost around the corner are Clifton’s four beaches, Table Mountain, shopping centres and access to the best day trips and tours in Cape Town.

And where do guests refresh after these exploits? In their choice of 11 individually decorated rooms and suites, of course.

We recently got the chance to explore these interiors, to experience for ourselves the comfort that drew Ellerman House’s loyal clientele time after time. What we discovered was not a conventional yet fancy hotel but a sanctuary where everything, from the service to the decor, is personal.

DELUXE HOUSE ROOM

There are seven of these refined rooms which are uniquely decorated in a classic and tasteful manner. Each has two sets of double doors opening up to a private terrace overlooking the indigenous garden. The atmosphere created is one of intimacy and freedom where guests can roam the grounds – as one would their own home – to pick up a book (from the in-house library) or a treat (from the pantry) and find somewhere inviting to lounge at all hours of the day.

SUPERIOR HOUSE ROOM

Throughout the property a common idea sustains – that each room might’ve been personally decorated by a sophisticated, loving owner with a discerning eye. This is evident in the superior room, a crisp space that, without enjoying a terrace, is decorated and positioned in such a way that a constant stream of light washes over it from the sea-facing windows.

Each of the 2 spa rooms, which are adjacent to Ellerman House Spa, is styled to invoke the pristine tranquility of its surroundings. Each has double sliding wooden doors that open to a shared deck and infinity pool, creating a ‘remote island paradise’ atmosphere.

ELLERMAN HOUSE SUITES

A Seaside Soiree – The Twelve Apostles Hotel

Cape Town

The place where earth, sea and sky meet

We bunked off early yesterday and made our way to The Twelve Apostles Hotel for sundowners and canapés. We often forget that we have this little thing called the ocean in Cape Town since we spend so much of the day in our office. But there it was – as pretty as ever – as we drove along the coastal road from Camps Bay to those twelve peaks called the Apostles.

Through the butler-attended entrance we slipped and picked up flutes of Champers before setting off on a short tour of the picnic spots and the newly-renovated Spa.

The picnic spots are dotted on the mountainside; you can choose where you’d like to dine – higher or lower, depending on your fitness level. The views over the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain National Park are out of this world. For guests staying here, it’s a must. The hotel’s location is quite remote compared to Cape Town’s other accommodation options and it feels as though it’s just you up there in the hills.

The award-winning Spa, with its seven superbly-equipped treatment rooms, shares that feeling of being away from it all. It has an intimate, sanctuary-like feel with white walls, gentle coves and soft, calming blue lights. It has recently undergone a makeover and boasts so many treatment options that your body, mind and soul should be cleansed, exfoliated and invigorated for life.

The best wellness equipment

There are hydrotherapy pools, a sauna, flotation tank, rain showers, a Rasul Chamber for traditional cleansing rituals using steam and mud, a manicure and pedicure salon and a Tranquillity Lounge. There are even magazines, iPods and snacks and drinks for your pleasure. Designed by Toni Tollman, family member of the family-owned Red Carnation Hotel Collection of boutique hotels, the interiors use natural stone, marble, granite and glass to create a textured feeling throughout, with Buddha statues and oil burners to add to the serenity of it all.

We took over the sofas in the corner of the Leopard Room Bar – a place I should frequent. We featured it in our Top 5 Restaurants/Bars with Sea Views List for 2011. Their bar definitely cuts no corners, with exquisite Martinis and a great selection of vodkas, cognacs and port, as well as several wines and cocktails. Heck – the bartenders will even throw together a cocktail of your choice – just name the ingredients! We snacked on gourmet treats like beef medallions, chicken skewers, cucumber sandwiches, chocolate-dipped strawberries, and more. They offer great snack platters, oysters, biltong and “Tea by the Sea” (from 2-6 pm), with macaroons and eclairs and other sweet temptations.

The evening wound down as we watched the sun set from the balcony outside. Inside, on a stool on the leopard-print carpet, a man played guitar and sang to his audience – the main member being a pig-tailed little girl hardly able to walk, but clapping louder than everyone else, as though she was the one knocking back the Jägermeisters.

Discover the Twelve Apostles

Yep, the Twelve Apostles Hotel is a favourite of many.

  • For more information or to book a stay at the Twelve Apostles Hotel, included in an itinerary of many other Cape Town delights, contact us. The hotel is part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, which also includes The Oyster Box Hotel in KwaZulu Natal and Bushmans Kloof in the Cederberg Mountains of the Western Cape.

MannaBay – The Ideal City Escape

Accommodation,Cape Town

“Come quickly! I am tasting stars!” — Dom Perignon, after his first sip of champagne

My weekend

MannaBay is the guesthouse that ruins it for all other guesthouses. Once you’ve stayed in this luxurious guesthouse in the heart of Cape Town, it’s very hard for any other to impress you. After several years of reviewing B&Bs, guesthouses, hotels, backpackers, game lodges and more, my standards have gone from looking on the bright side to downright snobbish.

MannaBay, situated at the foot of the Table Mountain, certainly didn’t help that. Suddenly the idea of sleeping on anything else but crisp white linen on a mahogany open eight-poster extra length king bed in a room with underfloor heating or bathing in a large, opulent free standing bath seemed preposterous.

Watch the Rhino Africa video of MannaBay here:

I arrived one Saturday as high tea was being served. Good god! What a spread! Chocolate brownies dusted with icing sugar, carrot cake with a generous layer of icing and walnuts, quiches, pastries, big jars of colourful sweets (jelly beans, fizzers…) and more. My snacks and I unashamedly took over one of the couches in the lounge area, with its the floor-to-ceiling glass doors and views of the magnificent city. I laid my snacks out on the mirror table and put my feet up on the furry white stools.

Relax and enjoy a drink in the stylish lounge

God, isn’t life wonderful, Hobson?

I felt a tad like the female version of Russell Brand in Arthur (or Dudley Moore in the original version of the film), a boozy spoiled playboy with chauffeurs doing everything for him. Any second I would strip to hotpants and do drunken somersaults on the bed in my room – the Orchid Room. Which happened later, in fact. Sorry neighbours, but when in Rome… they say.

Enjoy just about any kind of drink you can think of at the lounge bar

Some other tourists convened in the lounge as the sun slowly sank outside, creating a magnificent pinky-purple sunset. There was a couple from America as well as a single bloke from Switzerland. Or Holland. Or some other European country where they still believe that ravenous lions stalk the streets of Cape Town. My partner joined us and we all popped open a bottle o’ bubbly. Some discussed politics; some (me) got happily liquored. Our butler Shadrack saw to our every need. Well, almost every. He was delightful and definitely enhanced my stay.

Later an equally friendly chap named Simon took over as butler, and we all turned in for the night to unwind in the luxury of our rooms – state-of-the-art flat screen TVs with several satellite channels, extensive DVD collection, iPod docking station and spacious shower and bathroom.

Deep purple varietals of the unique and fragile orchid plant adorn the walls of the Orchid Room

Many say the Versailles Suite at MannaBay is the best – what with its private patio alongside a koi pond with views over the city and harbour beyond; the private sitting room; dressing room and white marble bathroom with vast shower and deep free standing tub. A big tub makes all the difference! Some prefer the Explorer Room, with its private balcony, capacious dressing room, fire place, extra length king size bed and white marble en-suite bathroom with bath and shower. There is also the Black & White Room and Pom Pom Room to choose from.

I guess I’ll have to return to give all the rooms a fair review…

Enjoy the best Eggs Benedict in town here!

Breakfast is a decadent affair here, much like what you’d expect from the grand Mount Nelson Hotel which is just down the road. Word is the chef here conjures up the best Eggs Benedict in town. I’d agree. But leave space for the buffet of fruits, cheeses, freshly squeezed juices, Africa’s finest single roast coffees, freshly baked breads and a selection of hot dishes.

Breakfast is a decadent affair at MannaBay

We whiled away the morning on the balcony – sun on our faces and a cloudless blue sky over my favourite city, while we paged through the Sunday Times paper and glugged cappuccino after cappuccino… It’s the way every Sunday should be spent.

MannaBay is the perfect base from which to explore Cape Town. Head to one of the nearby beaches – such as Camps Bay, browse the weekend markets, do some damage to the credit card at the V&A Waterfront or go on one of many great tours, and then return for a dip in MannaBay’s swimming pool and sip G&T sundowners on the balcony. Some say hedonism is a bad thing… I tend to disagree. In Cape Town, it’s inevitable.

 Specials

MannaBay is featured in our exclusive to Rhino Africa special that combines Cape Town, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve and Tswalu Kalahari Game Reserve or Chitwa Chitwa Game Lodge. Visit the specials page on our website for more information. Don’t miss out on this great deal!

The Royal Wedding!

Cape Town,Honeymoon

As with all things regal, us plebs can’t help but be captivated by the fairytale aspect of it all… Boy meets girl, boy is future king, they fall in love, he proposes to her in Africa and they marry in a wedding that the princess of myth and legend would be jealous of!

We know the couple love Africa… No one is one hundred percent sure at which Kenyan lodge Prince William popped the big question but we at Rhino Africa weren’t surprised… the romance of Africa is unparalleled!

This is set to be a global event, much like the FIFA World Cup or the opening of the Olympics… It really is a tough life when your nuptials are touted to be the most watched televised event ever, with an audience set to exceed 2.5 billion people!

But with great power comes great responsibility… Kate and Will have already shown that they are the modern version of the royal classic! From their portion of the 1,900 person guest list, including 50 members of the Royal Family and a further 40 guests from foreign Royal Families. The mode of transport used by the guests also has Kate and William written all over it, it is said that a red, London bus will shuttle the guests around.

The Queen will hold a Wedding Reception for the couple and their guests.  Followed by a private dinner dance, for close family and friends, hosted by the Prince of Wales. Kate will arrive at Westminster Abbey by car, a tradition for those of common station.  The service, which is to take place at 11am on Friday 29 April, will be conducted by Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury. On their journey from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace, the Royal Couple will pass Parliament Square, Whitehall, Horse Guards Parade and The Mall.

Perhaps the biggest question though, is who is designing the dress?! With no word on that little nugget, the next big question is whether our darling Kate will be wearing flowers in her hair or go with the more traditional tiara? Being of the more progressive camp in the royal stable, we think she might opt for the floral option… Might we suggest a Protea or two? Most likely however, Kate will don the “Girls of Great Britain and Ireland’ tiara and as is customary, this will be her wedding gift from the Queen.

It really is a wedding close to the hearts of South Africans. The Prince’s cousins call Cape Town home and the Royals have come to our beautiful country on many official and unofficial visits!

With all the fuss we are wondering where the couple are planning to go for their honeymoon… Could it be another African escape?

We have a suggestion or to in our Honeymoon section… Will it be romantic Banyan Tree in the Seychelles or perhaps MannaBay in Cape Town? If they are looking to build on their African safari engagement, we think Singita Lebombo would be perfect or perhaps even Londolozi Tree Camp.

But if they decide to be more traditional and do it in England then why not book one of those amazing destinations for yourself?! We’ll organise you a holiday fit for a King. So contact one of our expert travel consultants to book your romantic African holiday of a lifetime today.

And from all of us at Rhino Africa, we wish the Royal couple every happiness in their lives together.

We have a winner!!!

The Doctor Will See You Now.

Cape Town

There is an urban legend I was told when I moved to Cape Town. It tells that the wind, nicknamed the Cape Doctor, is sometimes so strong that city dwellers caught outside during a feisty gust have been known to hang onto street lamps and park benches to avoid being blown away. It’s called the Cape Doctor because the city streets and air are left clear and purified after a visit from the blustering physician. Perhaps you haven’t ventured outside today, but I have, and I am now certain that the Cape Doctor is in fact, well – fact! Wind is made here and exported to the rest of the country!

With some forecasts predicting gusts of up to 45 knots in and around the city, I do hope by the hair on my chinny chin chin that my house is built on strong foundations. You might be wondering what to fill your time with while the conditions outside are not conducive to more conventional leisure activities. You need only look to the locals for some inspiration…

Cape Town and her many beaches provide the setting for some of finest wind surfing and kite boarding on the continent. From Big Bay, the aptly named Kite Beach and Sunset Beach on the West Coast, Camps Bay, Noordhoek and Witsand on the Atlantic Seaboard and Muizenberg to Struisbaai on the Cape south coast, you can take your pick of more than 30 adrenaline inducing spots. And on days like today, the beaches also become spots for the not so extreme locals to sit and watch hundreds of kites moving across the shoreline.

Kite surfing is exhilarating and spectacular. As the name suggests, it combines surfing with flying a kite to the extent that you literally take off from the Ocean and hang in the thermals. It’s not as easy as it looks and lessons are a must for any novices! Fortunately, most of the hotels on the Peninsula offer lessons and equipment for the not so good to the semi-pros.

Now let’s just hope the Cape Doctor is here long enough to administer some windswept, festive fun before the holiday is over.

IGLTA Fam Trip to South Africa 2010!

Wow! We’ve spent the most amazing couple of weeks showing off our beautiful country to the IGLTA (International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association) and members of the IGLTA which included tour operators and agents from across the globe. We hosted representatives from Chicago,  San Francisco, Las Vegas, New York, Australia and the UK. What a combination! All aboard the fun bus!

We’ve laughed until we’ve cried and we’ve made some very good friends in the process. Today is a sad day indeed as we wave goodbye to the IGLTA (sadder for them though as most of them head back to a Northern Hemisphere winter!).

IGLTA Fam Trip to South Africa 2010!
IGLTA Fam Trip to South Africa 2010!

The idea behind the ‘Fam’ (‘familiarisation’ rather than ‘family’, although in this case, that works too) trip was to get members of the IGLTA to see our wonderful country and to understand what a fantastic destination it is for gay and lesbian travellers. It is always such a treat to show our country to people who know very little about the place or what to expect. And boy were they impressed! What a pleasure it was to host such a fantastic and passionate bunch of people. Whether it was Babs sporting her safari-chic, bee keeper’s outfit (apparently to keep the mosquitoes away), Bill (the one that looks like Prince William – more Prince than William) breaking out into an impromptu dance or Andrew and Alan forcing the Amro bear upon any willing bystander for a quick photo opportunity – there was never a dull moment.

David Ryan is the South African Ambassador to the IGLTA and is working hard to expand the membership base. The Gay & Lesbian travel market is a huge, untapped market from which we can all benefit by working together to promote the country as the stunningly beautiful, culturally eclectic and supremely tolerant destination that it is.

Rhino Africa and Out2Africa hosted two separate groups for two weeks – each spent a week in Cape Town staying at the MannaBay and 3 wonderful nights at Londolozi Private Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand where everyone saw the Big 5 and Babs (our lady from Las Vegas) managed to accessorize with the Big 5. For those who have never been on safari, it really is a life changing experience and for these guys, it was no exception as they got up close and personal some of Africa’s most magnificent wildlife – rhino, elephants, leopards, lion and buffalo were in abundance. As was the food and wine – Bacchus eat your heart out!

A big thank you to the teams at Rhino Tripping, Bateleur Air, SA Airlink, MannaBay and Londolozi for your help and generous support over the last few weeks in making the trip such an enormous success.

IGLTA Fam Trip to South Africa 2010!
IGLTA Fam Trip to South Africa 2010!
IGLTA Fam Trip to South Africa 2010!

We also hosted two small networking events at MannaBay so that the IGLTA members could meet local gay business owners as well as Cape Town Tourism – both events were really well attended and a great opportunity to swap some ideas and make some great new contacts.

We checked out the ‘Gaybourhood’ around De Waterkant and Green Point, we ate burgers at Beefcakes and partied the nights away at the Crew nightclub. We went star ‘gayzing’ up Signal Hill and sampled some amazing wines in the Cape Winelands from Meerlust and Kannonkop to Dieu Donne where we enjoyed a delicious lunch and an even more spectacular view. We drank a lot of pink champagne and we even saw penguins on a day tour to Cape Point.

Our whole hearted thanks goes out to the IGLTA and members who came on the Fam trips – you were an incredible bunch. We cannot wait to continue working with you and look forward to growing our friendships and networks. The next stop is Fort Lauderdale for the IGLTA convention in May 2011 – and what a convention that is going to be! The biggest ever IGLTA convention is expected and we cannot wait to be a part of it.

The Rhino Africa Safaris Year in Review

A Year in Review

Compliments of the season to you all! And what a year it’s been at Rhino Africa. None of this would have been possible without your amazing support, friendship and patronage and we’d like to pass on our sincere thanks to each of you.

We turned six and David Ryan, our intrepid leader, turned forty. He also underwent pioneering stem cell treatment in Germany. We celebrated in style at the red carpet of event of the year at the Mount Nelson hotel in Cape Town. We cycled 330kms across the Damaraland Desert in Nambia as part of Challenge4aCause and we raised around R800,000 for the Save the Rhino Trust and other charities!

Rhino Africa Safaris 2010

We blew our Vuvuzelas and celebrated a successful FIFA World Cup. We marched in front of Parliament on Rhino Day to raise awareness of rhino poaching, we made the prime time evening news and we launched the first phases of our new Rhino Africa website as well as the Horny Grazer restaurant reviews.

Rhino Africa Safaris 2010

We opened MannaBay at the foot of Table Mountain which has already become a roaring triumph with guests. We welcomed a whole team at MannaBay as well as Ross, Silke, Cathrine and Wanita at Rhino Africa.

Rhino Africa Safaris 2010

We spoke at Indaba, the Truth Debate and the World Travel Market about the importance of sustainable tourism and of supporting local communities. We launched our own Going Green Initiative with Heritage/Green Line and we worked with Cape Town Tourism to welcome the IGLTA to South Africa. We bought a piece of land in Khayelitsha to build two new classrooms for the Khumbulani Day Care Centre and we brought over 15,000 visitors to Africa!

Certainly a year to remember, and we’re looking forward to an even busier 2011!

To thank you all for your fantastic support this year we’re offering you something special this December.

If you complete your booking with Rhino Africa in December 2010, we will give you a $250 discount which you can put towards the cost of your international air fare!*

So don’t delay – offers like this don’t come along very often. Speak to one of our expert consultants immediately to book your dream African holiday…

Happy Holidays Y’All

The Horny Grazer Review
Five Rhino Rating
“Sleeping with prostitutes is like making your cat dance with you on its hind legs. You know it’s wrong, but you try to convince yourself that they’re enjoying it as well.” Jimmy Carr

Richard and I, dapper gentlemen that we are, arrived at the V&A Waterfront on a balmy winter’s evening. Terrific, warm sunshine has been the order of this winter. If it wasn’t for our guts we’d have certainly had a spring in our steps. Richard is the GM at MannaBay and is on the hunt for restaurants to recommend to guests. He’s going to be hard pushed to find something better to recommend to a first time visitor to Cape Town…

The setting is sublime – vivid colours, yachty totty, sea air and Table Mountain looming in the background. It’s a big restaurant – part of the Caviar Group which includes Blonde and Beluga, but it certainly beats its brethren for location, especially if you get a table in the ample outdoor area which is a must at lunch time. White umbrellas and matching table cloths, elegantly dressed waiters and polished cutlery, there’s a lot of sex appeal here. Inside, dark and opulent browns compliment the magnificent glass ‘wine wall’ which houses over 3000 bottles of wine. Because it’s in the V&A Waterfront however, I think a lot of people tend to assume that it’s bound to be a tourist trap – they worry that it’s going to be a triumph of style over substance – ordinary food at extraordinary prices. Sevruga has a similar allure to a Soho sex shop. People want to go in, but they know it’s not a good idea…

Well let the Horny Grazer be your green light in the red light district. Leave your scepticism at the door – the food is good, the service is polished and the portions are generous.

Sevruga Restaurant

I began with the wild mushroom tortellini served with wilted rocket, a tomato concassé and white truffle foam. Sounds fussy, but it was delicious – tasty and perfectly cooked. GM had the crayfish tian which was light and refreshing if a little heavy on the mayonnaise.

Sevruga specialises in seafood – for main course, you need look no further than the salmon wellington which is hearty and delicious. It’s a large portion and slightly clumsily presented on a bed of mash, but the pastry was cooked to perfection while the salmon was succulent. We ordered a few cheeky prawns and langoustines on the side – a selection of Queens, Langoustines and Tiger Giants. You have to order a Tiger Giant for the sheer novelty – these enormous sea critters have a much firmer meat than regular prawns while the langoustines offer (well they don’t really offer it, we kind of just kill them and take it) a much sweeter meat. Unlike prawns, langoustines are not segmented, so you get meat all the way from the head to the tail. As ever watching his waistline, GM opted for the Lindt chocolate Springbok served with pommes cocottes, wild mushrooms and a chocolate & port jus. Please consult your physician before ordering this devilishly delicious dish.

Sevruga Restaurant

Unsated, we shared the chocolate fondant. It’s hard to get a fondant wrong and really all comes down to the quality of the chocolate – this one was good, but curiously presented at one end of a chocolate skid mark on a rectangular plate.

Prices are on the steep side, but the menu is nicely varied with something to suit every wallet – they also have a fantastic sushi menu and offer half price sushi daily between 14pm and 17pm.

Sevruga is a great restaurant in a fab location and there is no reason why locals shouldn’t enjoy it as much as our overseas visitors. Just remember to book if you want to sit outside.

Cape Town’s latest and most exclusive boutique hotel has been hitting the headlines once again. This time in the House and Leisure magazine!

Read the House and Leisure article in .pdf format:

From the imperial indulgence of the Versailles suite to the acts of pith-helmeted derring-do which inspired the Explorer room, MannaBay is synonymous with timeless elegance and modern luxury. All the magnificent bedrooms have state-of-the-art flat screen TVs with a variety of satellite channels – you might also want to take advantage of the extensive DVD collection, or iPod docking stations. All rooms are fully air-conditioned and have underfloor heating if it gets a little chilly. In the opulent, white, marble bathrooms, you’ll find indulgent Moya products which use uniquely South African ingredients such as Rooibos and the essential oils of indigenous Cape Snowbush, Buchu, and Blue Mountain Sage. But it’s the imagination of the interior design at MannaBay which will really catch your eye, where intriguing furniture and exquisite art work abound.

The space and views are unsurpassed and with just seven suites, MannaBay offers one of the most intimate experiences available in the fairest Cape.

Catch a few rays on the vast wooden sun deck or swim beneath the splendour of Table Mountain as the bright, African sunlight pings off the azure water. There is a library rippling with African travel literature and home to an enormous television, ideal for catching a game of sport or watching a DVD. There’s also a writing desk and a laptop with full internet access for those who need to catch up with the outside world.

After afternoon tea (or even before for that matter), why not take a G&T in the lounge bar as the sun slips into the Atlantic beyond the glittering cityscape or unwind among the fine percale cottons of a four-poster King?

And with prices starting at R1,000 for a suite including breakfast, high-tea and a complimentary airport transfer, it’s hard to find a better value for money 5 Star experience in the Mother City!
