For a while now Capetonians have had the privilege of using the Red Tour City buses to explore the city. But now the Red buses have arrived in Johannesburg offering new ways for sightseeing.  Since the beginning of the year the iconic, open-top buses have been operating in Johannesburg with 12 different stops that include Constitution Hill, Carlton Centre, Apartheid Museum, and Gold Reef City to name just a few.

How It Works

Once you have purchased your daily pass you can Hop-on and Hop-off as many times as you like as the buses are available every 40 minutes.  If you are interested in a little bit of history you can visit Constitutional Hill and the Apartheid Museum in Soweto.  For a bit of shopping, and great 360 views of the city, the Carlton centre, the tallest office building in Johannesburg, is worth a visit.

What You’ll See

Johannesburg is known as the City of Gold and is home to some of the world’s largest mining companies and to find out more about the mining history of the city you can check out the Mining District Walk. Also, Gold Reef City is one of the most popular attractions in Johannesburg. You can have fun at the theme park, catch a show at the Lyric Theatre or try your luck at the casino. The buses operate from 9am to 5pm everyday at R150 per ticket or at a discounted price if purchased online.

For a Unique Ride

The Hop on Hop off bus is great for kids too!

For a quicker and cheaper way around the city within a 10km radius of Sandton, you can check out Shesha Tuks taxis which are Johannesburg’s newest way to travel within the city. The tuk-tuks are very popular in India and you won’t have to worry about the metres as the prices are set from R25 for 3km up to R55 for 10km.
