Between the night lights and the sunny skies, the mountain hikes and the beach picnics, the trains and the side-cars, you’ll soon discover that there really is no better place to get festive. Summer time in The Mother City is really a special time – the mountain stands against a crisp blue sky, the air smells like the salty ocean currents, the locals are infected with summer-fever (symptoms include high spirits, toothy smiles and the coco-nutty aroma of sunscreen). You’ll want to see eveything and anything Cape Town has to offer. Luckily, there are numerous and interesting ways to see and explore the fair city.
Getting Around
One option is the ever-popular “Hop-on Hop-off” topless bus. And while that doesn’t require you to remove any clothing, you are required to have the time of your life on the open deck. You have the option of two tours, either red or blue. The red tour leaves every 15 minutes and stops at eighteen great spots in the city, while the latter offers a mini tour of the peninsula, stopping at fourteen picturesque locations. For a rather unique view of the city, hop into a WWII styled-sidecar motorbike and take a 5-hour cruise through the peninsula. By the end of it, you’ll be tempted to write your very own ‘motocycle diary’.
Table Mountain is easily Cape Town’s most recognizable landmark and those looking for a real ‘high’ this holiday season will get a real bird’s eye view of The Mother City with the Table Mountain Cableway. Nothing rivals that panoramic view from the top of Table Mountain. The more adventurous can even try abseiling – adrenaline junkies will love the rush!
It’s difficult to go far in Cape Town without encountering the three “S”’s, namely, sun, surf and sand. With beautiful beaches fringing both coasts, you’ll have your choice between the crisp blue Atlantic or the warmer Indian waves. Both offer individual delights. Boulders Beach for example, is the only place where you can sunbathe side by side a bustling colony of African penguins. Take a day trip to Simon’s Town with a vintage steam train and watch the pretty landscape go by and pretend you’re in an Agatha Christie mystery.
After you’ve been introduced to the sights, the decent thing to do would be to get to know them a little better, maybe over some dinner.
