The (other) Academy Awards

While much of the media buzz this weekend was snapped up by the 83rd Academy Awards held in the States, a smaller but equally glamorous event was held at the Kruger National Park. The 2nd annual Animal Oscars (or Ellies as they are fondly called) saw a star studded menagerie of the animal kingdom’s finest, fastest and furriest don their best hides and take to the green carpet for an award ceremony with a twist. Rhino Africa was there to bring you the best (and worst) of the Ellies!

This year the trend on the red carpet was colour and many of the nominees went for bright feathers and plumage with opulent accessories. Some of the more on trend red carpet styles were seen on the crane and in the delicate eye make-up of the Loeries. Sadly, some of the more rugged birds missed the boat with earth tones and no flash factor.

As for the awards, there were many surprises and some jaw dropping moments:

With no surprise the award for Best Motion Picture went to the King’s Speech… the crowd roared with excitement!

Best Actor also went to Leo for the King’s Speech. The Pride was thrilled!

For her gripping portrayal of another species, Blu Crane won Best Actress for Black Swan.

Best original Screen Play went to The Social Network and the Meerkats.

The Elk from Denmark took home the Best Foreign Language Film for In a Better World.

For croquet and all things pink, Flamingo won Best Costume Design for Alice in Wonderland.

For the amazing transformation, Striped Hyena got Best Make Up for Wolfman.

Other awards included Vulture for Best Supporting Actress in The Fighter and for Monkey in Toy Story 3 scooping up Best Animated. Elephant and Monkey hosted the awards and this unlikely duo served up an entertaining evening.

If you were preoccupied with the bigger more glitzy awards you can visit Rhino Africa Safaris to book your a studio tour of Africa’s Tinseltown and the many wild stars that run wild here.
