69000 people hold their breath, the whistle blows, the ball flies off the turf and they erupt with a collective cheer! Africa’s time has come and the 2010 World Cup has arrived in style.

With images like this in mind and with 2010 around the corner, we decided it was time to visit the Green Point Stadium, Cape Town’s selected venue for the world’s greatest football showpiece! The Mother City will witness 9 matches during the 2010 extravaganza, including the 2nd match on 11 June, the opening day of the tournament, and the first semifinal on 6 July. And with an array of attractions in the city, from Table Mountain to the Winelands, you really could not ask for a better base to savour Africa’s first-ever FIFA World Cup.

The stadium is a new project, built beside the old stadium, which could not be enlarged or upgraded. And it is still very much a work in progress, as evidenced by the countless cranes and construction vehicles plying their trade back and forth. 10 stadia will host 64 matches from 11 June to 11 July, and Cape Town’s is one of the five new structures being built. It will have a capacity of 69,000 and will host fans from all over the world in a fiesta of football!

And the stadium’s location could not be better. It is just a short walk away from the famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront with its cafes, historic docks and shopping mall as well as Green Point and De Waterkant Village, with its trendy collection of bars, restaurants and nightclubs. The city centre is just 2km away and the Sea Point promenade and beaches of the Atlantic Ocean are within touching distance. There are a collection of hotels within walking distance, offering the ultimate luxury retreat from the chaos and craziness when you need some peace and quiet.

The stadium is due to be built the end of 2009 and will be an all-weather, multi-purpose venue complying with all FIFA requirements. Situated at the junction between sea and mountain, there is no better place to celebrate the beauty and diversity of the fairest Cape!
