Simply stunning.

Arriving to a candlelit dinner on Singita’s private airstrip set the tone for our trip. Less than two hours after leaving the hub of Johannesburg, we were being treated to a culinary feast in the heart of the bush. It was the most wonderful of African welcomes.

Set on the western border of the Kruger National Park, Singita froms parts of the greater Sabi Sands Game Reserve, arguably Africa’s premier game viewing destination. It is home to two lodges, Ebony and Boulders, both of which straddle the mighty Sand River.

All the rooms had been refurbished since my last foray into these parts – and they were nothing short of splendid. Like all the exclusive suites, we could immerse ourselves in our own private plunge pool or sip a cocktail on our wooden deck.

Alternatively you can sample any of the 12,000 bottles of South African and international wines hidden in a bush cellar deep below the ground. All wines are inclusive, so take the time to indulge yourself with the sommelier. And should you wish to take a bottle or any souvenirs home, the well-equipped boutique and curio shops will cater for all your needs.

The safari itself was amazing as we headed out into the 18,500-hectare reserve. The game viewing was spectacular – we spotted everything under the African sun before it made its way below the horizon. Our ranger Kevin was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating, making sure everyone felt involved and satisfied with their safari experience.

And when we made our way back to the lodge, weary-limbed but happy, we finished off an unforgettable few days with another excellent meal and few too many glasses of wine in the heart of the African wilderness.
